Everyone can be an eloquent public speaker. However, it takes concerted effort and determination. The first step towards becoming that confident, charming, eloquent and mesmerizing orator is to overcome challenges hindering your progress in public speaking.

Michael Jordan, a former Basketball super star said, “If you’re trying to achieve, there will be roadblocks. But, obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.”

Let us consider 5 roadblocks and how to overcome them.


Many students are potential powerful public speakers. But, only few progress to actualize their potentials in public speaking. Majority fail because they never had confidence in themselves.

Lisa Joronem, said, “The better people think they are, the better they will be. Positive self-image creates success.”

To build your confidence let us first identify why you feel unqualified or inferior.

A. Poor Command of English Language.

If you cannot speak good English you will always find it difficult to speak in public. You can improve your English by thinking in English. Many times you talk to yourself as you contemplate on what to do at any moment. With what language do you often do that? Most of us use our mother tongues.

From today, think in English. It will gradually help you to put your thoughts together and express them in good English.

Secondly, take your English classes at school seriously and make it your goal to learn a new thing in every English class you attend and start applying what you learnt immediately.

Listening attentively to people who speak good English and applying yourself to reading, will improve your English faster than you can imagine.

B. Natural Defects

Are you physically challenged? Do you have speech impediments like stammering? If yes, do not be discouraged. Accept who you are.

There is ability in disability. Your problem is most likely what you think about yourself than who you are.

No wonder, Martina Navratilova said, “Disability is a matter of perception. If you can do just one thing well, you’re needed by someone.”

Scott Hamilton said, “The only disability in life is a bad attitude.”

C. Past Failures.

The previous times you tried speaking in public were disastrous so you do not want to embarrass yourself again.

Kapil Deu said, “I don’t look into negative things. Go past mistakes and look forward.”

Yes, do not let your past control your life. Remember, every moment is a new beginning. Bob Feller, an American Baseball player said, “Every day is a new opportunity. You can build on yesterday’s success or put its failures behind and start over again. That’s the way life is, with a new game every day, and that is the way baseball is.”

D. What Negative People Tell You

If you will build your self-confidence, you must stay away from so called friends, who always tell you negative things and make you feel inferior. What you keep hearing from time to time will surely affect you. If you expose yourself to people, who always tell you why you are not qualified to reach your goal, you will sooner than later start doubting your own abilities. The solution is to keep people like that at arm’s length or at least do not share your goals or targets with them.

Israelmore Ayivor summarized it this way, “Things negative people will do to you. They will 1. Demean your value; 2. Destroy your image; 3. Drive you crazily; 4. Dispose your dreams; 5. Discredit your imagination; 6. Defame your abilities and 7. Disbelieve your opinions. Stay away from negative people.”


Many students find their heart racing, hands shaking, Knees knocking, and skin perspiring when they have to speak in public.

Laura Donnelly, an actress from Northern Ireland said, “Once and once, I walked on stage and my mind went utterly blank! I had no idea why I was there! My fellow actors had to rescue me. I was very young and new to the business, so I’m glad it didn’t give me stage fright for the rest of my life.”

If you do feel that way, be rest assured that you are not alone. Most students tend to be nervous before doing something important. To give you the strength needed for an important assignment, like public speaking, your body secretes a hormone called adrenaline.

If you put it to good use, it will spur and energize you to deliver your speech. But, if you fail to put it to good use it will heighten your nervousness.

Let us consider 8 steps that will help you overcome stage fright.

A. Acquire Speaking Experience.

Whenever you speak to people, no matter how informal the setting, even at home, endeavor to speak well.

Do not use wrong grammar or Pidgin English in informal conversations. Such laxity may hurt you when you have to speak in formal setting.

B. Be Prepared.

Prepare your speech very well. Rehearse as many times as possible and do so aloud taking the position in which you will be delivering your speech. If you will deliver your speech standing, no need to rehearse sitting down or lying down on your bed. Try to recreate how the actual speech delivery will be. It will help you to be relaxed when you are called upon to deliver your speech.

C. Think Positively.

Do not give way to negative thoughts. There may be some of your colleagues, who like bullying you, do not start thinking that they will want you to fail by laughing at you. There could also be some teachers or lecturers that you do not get along well with. If they will be present during your speech, do not waste your time thinking about them that they will make you fail. Rather, focus on your speech. If you speak very well, some of those fellow students who like bullying you will start loving you. Your wonderful speech can also restore a good relationship with those teachers or lecturers you are not in good terms with.

This may not be your first speech. The first time you spoke in public was disastrous. So as you prepare the next speech, your mind kept taking you back to that ugly experience and you start being afraid that the same thing will happen again. Remind yourself that every moment is a new beginning. Rather than conclude that you will fail again, focus on why you failed the previous time and correct them, you will be less scared.

If you have a physical deformity or there is something about you that makes you different from most people, you might start focus on it. Consequently, you will feel handicapped to deliver your speech.

Reassure yourself that this is an opportunity to make a good impression on your audience, fellow students and teachers/lecturers

D. Be At Your Best Physically and Mentally.

Your dressing and grooming must be appropriate. You could have a nice dress but your grooming is not good. For example, if a male student is putting on a well ironed shirt, trouser and a well polished pairs of shoes, you will agree with me that his dressing is good. But, will his grooming be good as well, if his cuffs were not buttoned; if he flies his shirt when he supposed to have tucked in; if he had no sucks and if his hairs are not combed? So, while dressing is about the clothes we put on, grooming is about the way we put the clothes on and everything about our appearance.

Moderation is the principle. If your dressing is shabby or sexually provocative, your audience will be distracted. Rather than pay rapt attention to your speech, some may end up looking at you lustfully.

You will lose your composure when many pairs of eyes are fixed on you.

Furthermore, failure to get enough rest the previous night can easily throw you off balance. So the eve of your speech is very important. Do not go clubbing, partying, watching movies or doing anything that will keep you awake till late into the night.

Do not let preparing for your speech stop you from getting enough night rest. Prepare ahead of time. When you wake up fresh, revived and reinvigorated, you will be in the best state of mind to deliver a good speech.

E. Take Long And Slow Breath.

The adrenaline that pours into your system to charge you up will also make your breath come faster. Do not go with this urge to take short and fast breath. If you do, you will speak hastily and incoherently. Everyone will know that you are not relaxed.

Breathe slowly and take long breaths to calm yourself down and it will prevent you from speaking so fast that you speak incoherently or in a tearful tone.

F. Most Nervousness Is Not Visible.

Most students think the audience really knows how nervous they are while delivering a speech. But, it is not true. Most of your fears cannot be noticed by the audience. It is the way you speak and your body language that will reveal your nervousness.

So if you have to walk from where you are sitting to where you will give your speech, walk erect and briskly.
