Introduction

Looking through the phases of life of humanity, one begins to wonder at the various misconceptions we have about the subject of success. At one level or the other we assume that we can do or succeed alone and, in most cases, without God. But we fail to understand that the quest for independence is merely a wild goose chase. It only leads to more dependence; on God, humans, things, organizations, beliefs or other such externalities.

Within living things and especially the human circles, if the plants refused to give out oxygen that humans take in there would be no life and if the animals failed to give out Carbon(iv)oxide there would be no life in plants also.

This was further validated in the Scriptures through the process and stages involved in creation by God. The plants were in place before man who would need oxygen was created. The sea was created before the aquatic animals were made. The looming darkness was the only justifiable reason for light. The water called for land and the land for the plants and the plants for the need for animals. All these creations necessitated the need of man who would tend and enhance their control and maximum productivity.

The created man required God's breath to function in that capacity that God has created him for. Either directly or indirectly, there was need for dependency. Even the creator God Himself depends on His Triune nature.

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Genesis 1:26- 27

Man came from God and needed God to live. Scriptures say he is god. But sin separated him from God and that was restored in Salvation. It is because of this that man after the Falls is trying through so many religions in an attempt to reach God.

Even nations who have gotten their independence and claim they are free are never free because they need bilateral trade agreements to build and develop their land. Do not ever be deceived that you can succeed alone. No nation on earth is self-sufficient. Only God is, and even at that the Bible establishes that He exists in Three Persons to fulfil His agenda at any given time.

Someone may ask, Are you saying independence is sinful or not sinful towards God and others? Yes, and no. It depends. This is because becoming independent about your God given purpose helps you not to be swerved from your assignment or purpose.

No, if understood that one can have a God given personality that has an innate tendency to bend towards independence. For instance, many in leadership positions are often independent in nature. Moreover, being independent and self-sufficient in one's own land or nation is commendable and not morally wrong.

The Israelites were so bent and dependable on Zion that they refused to sing the Lord's song in a foreign land as in the Old Testament. And God said He would hear them at all times when they repented and faced Jerusalem the city of God to pray and seek His face. Similarly, senior citizens in many nations today wanting to continue their independent lifestyles, and thereby not be a burden to families, friends or the government- can be commended. All these are examples of non-sinful or spiritually-neutral independence.

Yes, if a person's independent ways lead to a rejection of a dependency upon God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit for physical and spiritual sustenance. Yes, if by one's independence a person is being selfish and sins against others. And yes, if rebelling and not submitting to God-ordained authority, be it at work, in the church or from one's government.

One of the most self-reliant men and kings in history, king Nebuchadnezzar considered himself as independent until he saw God's anger. The Word says:

The tree that thou sawest, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached unto the heaven, and the sight thereof to all the earth; Whose leaves were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meat for all; under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and upon whose branches the fowls of the heaven had their habitation: It is thou, O king, that art grown and become strong: for thy greatness is grown, and reacheth unto heaven, and thy dominion to the end of the earth.

Daniel 4:20-22

God granted him success but the king claimed he did that all without God's involvement. As a result of pride or independent spirit, he claimed he did not partner with God in building Babylon, but by his self-will and technical know-how. The word further says.

This is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree of the most High, which is come upon my lord the king: At the end of twelve months he walked in the palace of the kingdom of Babylon. The king spake, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty?

Daniel 4:24,29-30

God never allowed the word come out from his mouth before he was shown the way into dependency. If you refuse to humble yourself God will humble you. The king maintained he built Babylon alone and God showed him how to be truly independent and after a year plus warning he became an animal in his independent quest. God showed him that of a truth that there is no independence from Him and while he was still speaking, the Scriptures say that

While the word was in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken; The kingdom is departed from thee. And they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field: they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and seven times shall pass over thee, until thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will. The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like eagles' feathers, and his nails like birds' claws. And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth forever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation: And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou? At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, mine honour and brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me. Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.

Daniel 4:31-37

One of the major signs of independence from God in any life is the focus on the I, me and myself.

The Apostle Paul, who probably considered himself quite independent before he met Christ, later confessed that the secret of his strength came from his total dependence on God. He submitted that God’s power is perfected in our weaknesses. The Scripture says in 2 Corinthians 12:9:

And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

The more dependent you are on God the more power you command on earth.

Some persons have problem and trouble depending on anyone. This is often as a result of being let down or burnouts. Or having someone who abandoned or walked out on them, either a parent, a mate or fiance or spouse who betrayed them. Or someone who they held dear, who let them down and all these make them think twice before they depend on anyone again.

The truth is that there is nobody who has left you who is so significant in life except the Lord Jesus Christ. Understand that anybody who walks out on you is not meant to be part of the ultimate glory. At times God allow this so that all glory will be given to Him and so that nobody can glory in the big future He is taking you to. And at other times it is because their part in your story is ended.

Most persons in such situations usually find themselves thinking they don’t need anyone. "I'm on my own. And I'm doing just fine.”, they seem to say. And from such attitude they abandon God too and get addicted to something else. But this mindset can only hurt the one who harbours it and only depending on God who longs for us to depend on Him will bring healing.

Therefore, if you have prided yourself on being independent and not needing anyone in the past or have just feared trusting another person because of disappointments or betrayals, I want you to know God wants to make up more for your disappointment in someone else by showing you how reliable it is to be depended on Him and His Word, the fellowship of the brethren, family and friends and those you come in contact with every day.
