DEDICATION

I Affectionately dedicate this book to:

  • God Almighty; the giver of positive thought, the master planner of our being and the only true giver of good life. Our heavenly Father, Jehovah is His name.

  • And also to all POSITIVE THINKERS that are encouraging, strengthening and imparting positive thoughts to the hopeless and pessimist.

FOREWORD

In any direction a man wants to travel, there must be a WAY that will take him there. Knowing the way is very important. This saves time and money because some ways will take you there within a short time, some other will take a longer time before you get there.

Following some ways may cost you so much in terms of money, energy and other resources, while others may cost quite less.

There are ways that if you follow, you may never ever get to your desired destination. That is why the Bible says, ‘there is a way that seemeth right to a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death’. Proverb 14:12.

In my own understanding, the way that will take you to your destination within a very short time and with minimum possible effort is what I call ‘THE POSITIVE PATHWAY’. In business management; it is called the least cost path.

In this book, The Secret to Happiness: Overcoming Negative Thinking, Bro. Lawrence Alfred has provided daily insight to how you can live a fulfilled life and be happy throughout the year. In his wisdom, a positive mindset is at the centre of every transformation your life will experience. Change your deliverance from a life of fruitlessness.

This book contains simple but fundamental principles that are critical to your success in every facet of life. I recommended it to you and all your loved ones. But before I close, please note that giving your life is the beginning of the greatest adventure for which you were created. No life can ever be fulfilled outside Jesus. Accept Him today as your Lord and personal Saviour and all you will be reading in this book can truly work for you. Do it now!

Thanks and God bless you.

PREFACE

To every opportunity there is positive and negative thinking. Isolate and insulate the positive from possibility. Neutralize the negative. Exploit the possibility and sublime the negative. Don’t allow the negative to kill the positive potential that is within the opportunity.

A great achiever was not born but made. Heroes, heroines, pacesetter and highly successful individuals are not gods, neither spirits nor angels but ordinary human beings like you and I. Extraordinary people are merely ordinary people with extraordinary determination to succeed in life. If other people can make it, we are bound to make it too. Nobody is born great; you become what you always speak, think, picture and imagine about yourself. You can if you think you can .You can’t if you think you can’t. You are the architect of your own life. Get the right thought for your life today!

Of recent, I learnt that a person is what he takes into himself. One’s input determines his output. Your thought and aspiration in life determine your level of achievement. The kind of seed that you sow determines the kind of harvest that you will reap. It is like a principle of sow and harvest:

Be not deceived, God is not mocked for whatever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the spirit shall of the spirit reap life everlasting’. Gal. 6 vs.7-8

Based on the surroundings we find ourselves, the present situation at home, the pendulum situation of our economy now-a-days and the challenges of life that we battle on daily basis can actually make someone say negative things to positive things. Little wonder why many people live in sickness, poverty, suffering, fear, guilt, condemnation, bankruptcy, worry, shame, defeat, penury and backwardness because of what they say of themselves on daily basis. In spite of this, thousands are still living fine, healthy, vibrant, wonderful, favoured, robust, wealthy and fantastically good because of their positive attitude towards life. ‘To one person the world is desolate, dull and empty; to another the same world looks rich, interesting and full of meaning’ says John Mason.

Nobody is born a success or a failure. Neither are the two inherited. Both are functions of our attitude towards life. Both are reward of what we daily invest our time and thought on, the product of the word we say to ourselves daily, the thought we heap up in our heart towards life, the image we create in our mind about life, and the step and approach we apply to achieve something worthwhile in life. Life is tremendously nice and fantastically good if only we can exploit it maximally. Discover who you are and your own real value. Get a positive plan, set up a positive goal, have a positive vision towards life and strategize positive steps to achieve them.

This book will help you to locate your destiny and develop a positive approach to achieve them. It will definitely lead you to a positive pathway to your success, glory, abundance, good living, supernatural breakthrough and finally help you to stay alive to enjoy your handiwork. You will not die before your time in Jesus name (Amen). The good and positive potentials in you will not die or perish without them been accomplished in Jesus name (Amen) Ps 118 vs. 17 says ‘I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord’. Claim it. It is yours in the Lord.

Think positively and change your world greatly.

To live good in life, you must get connected to:

  • GOD: The master planner of our being, the only giver of good life. He knows the end right from the beginning. Our heavenly Father, Jehovah is His name.

  • JESUS: The good fountain of life, the channel of good living, the living water that flows ceaselessly from God (John 4 vs. 14, 7 vs. 37), the giver of peace (Jn 14 vs. 27), the authour and finisher of our faith.

  • The Holy Spirit: Comforter and the Director of good living – (John 14 vs. 20).

  • Discover His plan, purpose, ideas, projects, opinions, and thoughts for your life. Get to know how He treasures your existence and His concern for you to enjoy good health, abundance, affluence, peace, happiness, and supernatural breakthrough (Jer.29 vs.11). His perfect will for you since the world began and the principle of His lifestyle will set you on positive pathway which is the secret to happiness by overcoming negative thinking to a good living (III John 2).

Eternal God is your refuge, underneath is the everlasting arm; He will guide and preserve you from all evil (Deut.33vs.27). He will lead you to your supernatural abundance in life, the green pasture of your soul (Ps. 23 vs. 2). But without Him, you can do nothing. (John 15vs.5b).

God is truly concerned about you. He cares for everybody including you (I Peter 5 vs.6). He has many miracles in store for you. He is ever ready to help you. He is calling you to Himself. If only you can yield to His calling today by giving Him the chance in your life to operate as your personal Lord and Saviour, and then prove Him whether He can fulfill what He has promised (Number 22 vs.19). The goodness of the Lord will start unfolding in your life from this day as you yield in Jesus name (Amen). Good living is rightly set before you (Deut. 30 vs.15 – 96). Accept it, believe it, and confess it. This very book in your hand is a sure positive pathway to a good life. God bless you as you read on in Jesus name (Amen).

INTRODUCTION

You are welcome to the world of The Secret to Happiness. The word that is doing its best to put smile, joy and laughter into the life of the melancholic, hopeless, helpless, dejected, downcast, outcast, pessimist and riff-raff. It is a world that is committed to substituting people’s negativism for positive mindset.

This is a word that is changing failure to success, obscurity to radiance, hopelessness to hopefulness, abandonment to abundance, uselessness to usefulness, worthlessness to worthiness, sorrow to joy, discouragement to encouragement and many more. Many so-called sicknesses that defy medical solution have been healed miraculously through right thinking. Different broken homes and families have been rejuvenated through positive counseling and seminar. I want to say, “Positive thinking leads to right living”.

To join positive people all over the world, you need to purify your mind, refine your thought and plant positive things into your sub-consciousness. This can be done by visiting positive people, go for positive counseling and join a positive thinkers’ club. Do positive things at all time by acting and behaving positively.

Positive thinkers are radiant people. They are glorious, intelligent, organized, experienced, goal oriented and peacekeeping people. They are the happiest people in life. They radiate when others are down cast. They see opportunities where others see obstacles. They laugh when others mourn. They have faith in God and themselves while others believe in doubt and complain. They enjoy health amidst sickness. They enjoy promotion and upliftment in the face of hardship and economic dilapidation. They are comfortable, coupled with peace of mind within their means. They are wonderful and marvelous people.

They live long. They seldom visit physicians. Some can do without visiting a doctor in a year because right thinking is a good medicine which leads to right and healthy living. You too can join them today and enjoy unlimited benefit throughout the year. Therefore, think positively and enjoy a/an:

Chapter 1

Thanksgiving

Give thanks with a grateful heart

Give thanks to the Holy one

Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ His Son

And now;

Let the weak say I’m strong

Let the poor say I’m rich

Because of what the Lord has done for us

Give thanks, give thanks, give thanks…

Many people believe that giving thanks is meant for well-to-do individuals. They claim that they are the people that God Almighty bestowed His wealth upon; therefore God deserves their praise and thanksgiving. “If God deserves my praise He would have turned my situation around for better” many would lament. “Why am I suffering like a forgotten orphan? Nobody cares about me and my well being.

A single individual has never surfaced to render a helping hand. Things are going from bad to worse without a hope for tomorrow. In fact, I am short of words to describe my predicament and someone still expects me to praise God?” “I can’t be wallowing and struggling to raise my head in the mud of poverty and worse still my daily meal is not certain, good shelter is not guaranteed, clothing is in shambles, accommodation is a dream never realized and with all round failure on every edge I turned to. No Job after all possible effort, bareness in all ramification, physical and emotional handicap, and worst of all no companion to share my plight with. In all these, you still want me to praise God? Impossible”

Beloved, I understand your plight. God is not ignorant of what you are passing through. Jesus is not blind about your predicament. The Holy Spirit is not incapacitated about your present life. He knows everything about your life. He created you to have a GOOD LIFE. Do you appreciate Him for what He has done for you? Do you try to praise Him when things do not workout fine? Do you one day think or meditate over His wonderful mercies upon you? You may rightly ask; what type of mercy is that? You may even conclude that the mercy of the Lord is not meant for you at-all. You may explode by saying “If He didn’t count me out of His mercies, I have counted myself out. God is less concern about me. God is partial in wealth and position distribution”.

If your situation is rightly described above, kindly wait a minute for explanation. Do you consider the glorious life you have presently? When there is life there is hope the adage goes. Do you one day think of those that daily lose their lives in fatal motor accidents? What about unforeseen plane crash, earthquake, hurricane, tornado, tsunami, volcanic eruption and flooding that claim several thousands of lives? Armed robbers have sent some people to early grave. Those swallowed up by mansions erected by them are worth mentioning. Some met their waterloo in the vehicle bought with their own money. Many people kiss life goodbye by virtue of their own possessions. By way of business, some lives have been suffocated whereas some gave up the ghost through assassination. Even some people are weeping seriously to be relieved of terminal diseases and sicknesses. Some want to bribe sickness with money, even with their whole possession but no way.

The first miracle that can ever happen to anybody on earth is the miracle of sleeping and waking up successfully. God in His infinite mercy preserved your precious life to see the brightness of today in peace not in pieces, in good health not in hospital. Your ears can hear. Your legs, hands and other parts of your body are in good shape. We are supposed to be in mortuary but we are in the sanctuary of God by His unmerited grace and unfailing mercies. My friend, you need no excuse than to launch into the act of praising, adoring, worshipping and giving thanks unto your maker, God. He is worthy of all our praises.

In all things give thanks (I Thessa. 5 vs.18). Those people you even call rich, well to do or highly placed individual have their personal problems. Some of them want to be as free as you are but no way. Some are groaning bitterly in secret only to appear gorgeous outside. The rich also cry! They weep in their closet but rub their faces with cream and powder when going out. What a pathetic lifestyle. Some are choked up with a lot of responsibilities. They will move from one meeting to another. They don’t even have time for themselves let alone their family, wife and children. To say their prayer in the morning is a hard nut for them to crack because they are not used to it and those that are even used to it may be too busy to talk to their maker. Don’t jump out of your house without praying please. It is dangerous! Some don’t have the time to waste in prayer let alone praising and giving thanks unto the Lord.

Don’t wait for anybody before you swing into the act of praising the Lord. It is meant for everybody. Both rich and poor, old and young, man and woman, children and adult are expected to praise the Lord all the time. Praise is the only weapon that can move the hand of God in moving your mountains and leveling your valleys. The children of Israel praised the Lord and the Jericho wall fell down flat before them. As you yield this time to start praising the Lord, no matter your problems, they will scatter in Jesus name (Amen). Praise the Lord when you don’t seem like. Praise the Lord when you seem like. Praise the Lord until it becomes your part and parcel. God will bless you as you do this in Jesus name.

BE A GRATEFUL BEING

Learn how to appreciate things done for you no matter how small that thing is. It is only the ingrate that will not appreciate a little deed done for him. Learn how to say “thank you very much” to anyone that rendered you a help. Don’t think it is when the people in question buy you a car or build you a mansion or a jet or present you something worthwhile before you can say thanks. Even a sachet of pure water attracts a vote of thanks. Thank those who offer you a sweet or chewing gum.

It may be difficult to start if you haven’t started before. You too can join the chariot of grateful hearts today. It is a matter of try and see, and gradually it will become part of you. It won’t lower your self-esteem but rather boost it. Your children, neighbours, partners and other acquaintances will definitely learn a great lesson from you if you can practise it as from today. Don’t feel shy but be courageous. It won’t downgrade your worth but it will add respect, honour, glory, and adoration to your feather.

Anybody that can’t praise or appreciate his neighbour can’t definitely appreciate or praise God (1 John 4 vs. 20). Be a grateful being today by appreciating what God has done for you and your family. No matter your condition, try hard to praise God. Praise will definitely move the hand of God in removing your mountains and level your valleys. By the time you immerse yourself in act of praising and worshipping God, peace, joy, happiness, breakthrough, abundant blessing will surely overthrow your life in Jesus name (Amen).

There are three enemies of personal peace; regret over yesterday’s mistakes, anxiety over tomorrow’s problems and ingratitude for today’s blessing LEARN HOW TO APOLOGISE

Some caliber of people claim to be too big to apologize for their wrongs. They always prove to be Mr. Right because they have “sweet mouth” or a good command of English Language. Some can quote the constitution, laws, Bible, Qu’ran and lots more in order to justify their mistakes or evil deed. No matter your academic or social background, two wrongs can’t make a right. Mere “I’m sorry” can go a long way in pouring cold water on the fire of sentiment. Some cases that do not call for alarm have turned into inferno due to inability to apply the neutralizer “I am sorry”. Owing to this, many people have lost their properties, if not their lives, jobs, responsibilities and many more because of pomposity. Likewise, let words like “I’m sorry”, “please”, “forgive me”, “I will not do that again”, “don’t be annoyed”, “take it easy please” and many more be your watchword. These words will pacify a raging soul even if he plans a serious combat. Your mood should not over rule your conscience when there is a mistake to correct. Your position or attainment should not impede your discretion when you are wrong. Nobody is above mistakes. May the good Lord give you a flexible heart to admit your fault and teach you the way to go about it.

We are bound to misinterpret one another sometimes or step on one another’s toes while rushing to enter a bus or in our house or place of work. Offences must come. When they come, apply a simple antidote immediately. If you can only start today, your days will be glamorous, you will have new friends, you will overcome bad habits, your loved ones will benefit from your new lifestyle. Old weaknesses and chronic ailments will disappear. Sicknesses will be cured. A new self assurance and self esteem will possess you. You will succeed instead of failing. You will be relieved from pressure and tension. Good living will become pleasure to you. You will be happy and know achievement. People will esteem you and believe in you.

ADOPT GOOD APPROACH

Whenever there is a score to settle with someone, think deeply before you finally break loose. Looking at some situation, it may demand that you flare up, scatter the ground, vandalize properties and even sink the whole world but remember that anger is a spirit that can destroy all what you have built for years in a minute and finally wreck the ship of your life at the deepest part of the ocean. What it is going to leave you with is “Had I known”.

When you are angry count one to ten and when you are very angry count one to hundred before you utter any statement”. Anything uttered negatively will surely be used against you if not now but later. Don’t react negatively and violently the way the issue pains you. If you do, you will lose your temper and invariably lose your worth.

Different matters need different approaches. The method you adopt for one may be quite irrelevant to another one that will come your way shortly. Be wise, pray for divine wisdom every day. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraided not; and it shall be given him.” James 1 vs. 5

Avoid foul language when hard issue occurs. “Silence is the best answer to a fool if he thinks he is Mr. Right”. Don’t argue with the person whose discretion you can’t prove less you become as twice foolish as he. As long as you argue with him, you will complicate the issue for yourself. Argument will add to your aggression, subtract from your strength, multiply your fury and divide your thought and concentration. Avoid it. It is a negative pathway to good living.

LEARN GOOD WAYS OF LIFE

In life, collisions of many sorts do happen. Friction between peers occurs too. For the fact that we can’t be in isolation we choose to make friends. We interact with them warmly and amicably. Sometimes, we copy their ways and lifestyles. They influence us either positively or negatively. Which character do you learn from your best friend? Besides, what type of friend do you have? Show me your friend, and then I will show you who you are.

Evil communication corrupts good manners” Endeavour to choose good friends; even when you’ve done so, don’t swallow all his/her behaviours with hook, line and sinker. There are positive and negative characters in him. Isolate the positive, neutralize the negative and purify the positive for your benefit. Don’t be influenced by his negative behaviours. Don’t covet bad things. Don’t be carried away with cash. Be yourself, act positively and always think positively. Learn good things out of life. Pick good characters from your friends and add to your own. Character wise, you will be better off by the time you finally leave him or her.

LEARN THE WAY OF THE LORD

Nothing in life can be compared with the thought of knowing God and knowing He knows you” – C.E.S.

Humanity instinctively seeks God. He yearns for meaning. His life has divine purpose and until he discovers that purpose, he lives in a vacuum. Uncertainty makes him pessimist. Unless life has total meaning with God, it becomes a total mess without God” – T.L. Osborn.

The best way to a good life is the way of the Lord. Other ways are short cuts, which seem good in the eyes of man but the end thereof is destruction (Prov. 16 vs. 25). Jesus is the way, the truth and the life, whosever cometh to Him shall never die (be misled). John 4 vs. 6. The way of the Lord is very narrow but that of satan is wide. That is why Bible enjoins us to:

Enter in at the strait gate; for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat. Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life (Good life), and few there be that find it”. Matthew 7 vs. 13

The most cherished possession I wish I could give you is my faith in Jesus Christ, for with Him and nothing else you can be happy. But without Him and with everything else you’ll never be happy. That is the secret of happiness. The only positive pathway to good life is through Jesus (John 14 vs.6).

My son forget not my law but let your heart keep my commandments for length of days and long life and peace shall they add to thee” Proverbs 3 Vs. 1 - 2

Chapter 2

Love

Our English word ‘Love’ is a hopelessly inadequate one with which to convey all the semantic connotations which we demand of it. We say, “I just love this desert”, “Do you promise to love, cherish and honour?” “And Jane loved John”, “So faith, hope and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love”. Cecil G. Osborne D.D.

Love is a supreme effort to escape from prison of our aloneness, to seek completeness for our incompleteness, to trade our isolation for companionship” Cecil G. Osborne D.D.

Love is an emotional desire; a thirst that can’t be quenched to fulfill the need of other person” Julius A Fritz

Love is not getting but giving; not a wild dream of pleasure and a madness of desire. It is goodness and honour, and peace and pure living” Van Dyke.

(You can get more definitions of love from my book “A to Z Positive Pathway to a True Love”)

IMPORTANCE OF LOVE

The most important thing in the universe is love. Out of unfeigned love, God created us. (Gen. 1 vs. 26-30). For us not to lose eternally and to reconnect us to Him, He sent His only begotten Son (John 3 vs. 16). He loved us ultimately. He gives us freely; life, sun, rain, stars, moons, seasons, weather etc. Without love, life will be lifeless. In the absence of love, life will portray cruelty, animosity, failure, anarchy, lewdness, chastity and thereby making it uncomfortable for living. Love is supreme and ultimate. The greatest thing to everybody or someone that desires good life is to possess true love.

The critical question is “do we love one another or lust after mundane things of this world”? As important as love is, we still find time to hate. Some have mistakenly called lust love. They lust after a girl, a boy, a car, a building but devoid of true and natural love for humanity. Love is expressed more deeply than infatuation that comes from our mouth. It is deep rooted inside the heart than its outward confession. Love should be shown in deed and action. “Love is not adolescent infatuation or even sexual attraction. Important as this is, love is basically love of life, love of God, love of oneself, love of others, and the expressing of love in manifold ways” Cecil G. Osborne D.D .

See the true colour of love in 1 Cor. 13 vs. 1-8.

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity (Love), I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understanding all mysteries, and all the knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profited me nothing. Charity suffers long, and is kind; charity envied not; charity vaunted not itself, is not puffed up. Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeks not her own, is not easily provoked, thinks no evil; rejoice not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; bears all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endures all things; charity never faileth; but whether there be tongues, they shall fail; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away”.

Don’t be a reader or a hearer only but be the doer of the above words. If only you can practice it, living good will be easy. Different types of love can be seen clearly in my book titled “A to Z Positive Pathway to a True love”. Endeavour to get a copy. It will profit you.

And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfection”. Colossians 3 vs. 14

LOVE FOR GOD

Love originated from God. God is love. He loves us. He created us in His own image, not the image of trees or animal but the very image of Himself. Wonderful! How can we reciprocate this love? If we give God money, He wouldn’t take it. If we cook delicious and tantalizing food, He wouldn’t eat it. If we build mansion for Him, He wouldn’t abide in it. No shirt can size Him. No shoe can enter His leg. How then can we reciprocate His unfeigned love for humanity?

And thou shall love the Lord thy God with all your heart, and with all thy soul and with all thy might” Deut. 6 vs. 5

Thou shall love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul and with your entire mind. This is the first and great commandment” Matt 22 vs.37-38

The only way you can reciprocate God’s love is to love Him with your heart, mind, spirit, soul, body and all your being. The only thing He needs from you is your praise. Praise Him for what He has done, what He is doing and yet to do for you. Show your appreciation to Him in the morning, afternoon, evening, night and every time. Make God the first priority in your life. Do many people who say “God first” really mean what they write or say? Good living is awaiting you if you can indeed put God first in your life, business, family, work etc. Put Him as number one in the list of your life. To put Him first, you must love what He loves and hate what He hates.

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man loves the world, the love of the father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof; but he that doeth the will of God abides forever” 1 John 2 vs. 15 -17

Ye adulterer and adulteress, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend to the world will be an enemy of God. (James 4 vs.4) “If you love God, keep His commandment” John 14 vs.14. “God is love” I John 4 vs.8. Love God with all your heart. Love Him with all your might. Love God with all your substances (Proverb 3 vs.9). Love His word (Joshua 1vs. 8). Love His ministers. Love Him without any reservation. He loves you. He died for you (John 15 vs.19). He cares for you too. (1 Pet.5 vs.7)

LOVE FOR OUR NEIGHBOUR

“…Thou shall love thy neighbour as thyself” (Matt. 22 vs. 28). Beloved let us love one another; for love is of God, and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that love not knows not God, for God is love (1 John 4 vs. 7- 8).

People claim to love God yet they neglect their neighbours, this is not love. They don’t like God let alone loving Him. “If a man says, I love God, and hated his brother (neighbour) he is a liar; for he that loves not his brother (neighbour) whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? And this commandment has we from Him. That he who love God love his brother also.”1 John 4 vs., 20 – 21

How can you prove your love for God? How can God recognize your love if it does not overflow to your neighbour? How can your neighbours glorify God on your behave if you haven’t stretched the arms of love to them? Are your hands too stiff to stretch? You prefer throwing away the remaining food the next day to giving it to your neighbours. What profit do you receive? You prefer closing your eyes to the needy around you. You prove indifferent to their plight. Wait a minute, do you think the position you are today is because of your own making or influence or ability? Not at-all, it is God’s mercy (Lamentation 3 vs. 22).

Don’t turn deaf ear to the need of others when you are in position to help. God helped you in order for you to help others. Don’t wait till you become a millionaire or stinkingly rich or for a convenient time, it may not come. Start today by rescuing the dying souls around you. Love sacrificially. LOVE YOUR ENEMIES

The above headline may sound strange, ridiculous and funny to many people but it is a fact from the Bible.

You have heard that it hath been said, thou shall love thy neighbour, and hate your enemy. But I say unto you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you”… And if you love them that love you, what rewards have ye? Do not even the publican so?”… Matt. 5 vs. 43 - 47
