Excerpt for Great Advice from some Really Smart People by , available in its entirety at Smashwords

Introduction

This guide is for anyone looking to improve their life. It is a collection of 100 of my favourite quotations by some very successful, very smart people. This is in no way a how-to book. It is a starting point to help you in making changes in your life. It can easily be read in under 20 minutes. But if you follow the suggestions offered here the benefits will be with you for life.

I would urge you, and this has worked for me, to spend five minutes reading these quotations twice a day. I suggest first thing in the morning and the last thing you do at night when going to bed. This will do two things for you. In the morning, it will help you in deciding what you are going to do that day to get you closer to achieving your goal. In the evening, it is a great way to feed your subconscious mind directions on how to solve problems in your life that are concerning you right now.

What has worked best for me is that after reading the quotations all the way through several times, then, I would pick three or four quotations at random for my morning and evening sessions. It didn't matter if I read the same quotation multiple times within a short time span. Every time I read them I would be in a different state of mind, and find new interpretations and action plans even from the same words.

The comments underneath the quotations are simply notes I wrote for myself on my interpretation of what the personality was telling me. They are there for you to use or not use, it is of course entirely up to you. All I'm trying to do here is get you started on your way to fulfilling your dreams. Hopefully some of these quotations, and maybe even a couple of my comments will provide the spark you need to help you get to that place you dream about when your head hits the pillow at night. Many of these gems did exactly that for me.

The 100 quotations here are maybe 10% of all the quotations I have gathered over the years. I consider them to be my top 100, which is why I want to share them with you.

Happy Dreams.

100. The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination.

Albert Einstein

I love this quotation because it emphasizes just how important imagination is to achieving our goals. Having a goal is just the start. How to turn that goal into reality is the tough part. I start by listing all possible ways, including crazy, out-of-the-box ideas, and from there pick the two or three that offer the most promise. So get out a pad and pencil and spend the next 10 minutes writing down all the crazy ways you might try to achieve your goal.

99. The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential... these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence.

Confucius

I love the action words here… will, desire, urge. If these words are not part of your vocabulary, maybe what you have is more of a wish than a goal. You must be totally honest with yourself in deciding just how badly you really want to attain that goal.

98. Perseverance is failing 19 times and succeeding the 20th.

Julie Andrews

This pretty much says it all. If you try something once or twice and it doesn't work out do you quit? If so, maybe you didn't really want it that badly to begin with. How badly do you want to? What are you willing to do to get there? Be honest.

97. Set your sights high, the higher the better. Expect the most wonderful things to happen, not in the future but right now. Realize that nothing is too good. Allow absolutely nothing to hamper you or hold you up in any way.

Eileen Caddy

This is really a follow-up to point number 98. Here is where you must have a serious talk with yourself and determine if you are ready to do anything it takes to win today. Are you willing to overcome all obstacles?

96. A goal is a dream with a deadline.

Napoleon Hill

Perfectly said. A dream is a wish. You hope someday it may happen. Giving that dream a deadline, and some concrete steps along the way turns the dream into a goal which now is both actionable and measurable.

95. The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.

Vince Lombardi

Not every goal we set for ourselves will be successful. Sometimes only part of the goal will be attained. And sometimes none. What is important here not just for this goal but for future goals as well is that you did everything possible to make it happen. Many times the journey can be more important than the destination.

94. The first step to getting the things you want out of life is this: Decide what you want.

Ben Stein

This takes us back to the wish or dream scenario. Is what you want merely a wish you hope happens someday, or is it something you want so bad you will do anything to make it happen. This really is the first step. Take a minute and rent this on a scale of 1 to 10. 1 being yeah it would be nice if it happened, 10 being I will do whatever it takes to get there. If you were honest with yourself, and your rank is not a 5 or higher you might want to consider focusing your energy on a different goal.

93. The big secret in life is that there is no big secret. Whatever your goal, you can get there if you're willing to work.

Oprah Winfrey

Back to what everyone is saying. There are two simple questions you must answer. How badly do you really wanted? How hard are you willing to work to attain it?

92. Genius is one per cent inspiration, ninety-nine per cent perspiration.

Thomas A. Edison

Achieving any goal is going to be hard work on your part. That is why it is so important to rank exactly and honestly what sacrifices you're willing to make to succeed.

91. You have to recognize when the right place and the right time fuse and take advantage of that opportunity. There are plenty of opportunities out there. You can't sit back and wait.

Ellen Metcalf

What is going on in your life right now that can help you get to your goal? Are there people, places, or things that can help you along the way? Do not let any situation pass you by without first considering if it can help you in someway to achieve your dream.

90. The person who makes a success of living is the one who see his goal steadily and aims for it unswervingly. That is dedication.

Cecil B. DeMille

Once you have your eye on the prize”, do not let anyone or anything distract you from capturing that prize.

89. I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.

Michael Jordan

Some of the best advice you will find from arguably the best basketball player to ever play the game. Never be afraid to try, and fail. The important part is to learn from your mistakes and try again.

88. For success, attitude is equally as important as ability.

Walter Scott

Maintaining a winning attitude even when things are not going exactly as planned as a key factor in continuing my journey.

87. If you're going through hell, keep going.

Winston Churchill

Sooner or later you will come out the other side.

86. Do the one thing you think you cannot do. Fail at it. Try again. Do better the second time. The only people who never tumble are those who never mount the high wire. This is your moment. Own it.

Oprah Winfrey

Do not let setbacks discourage you. If it were easy everyone would be doing it. Try. Try again. And then try one more time. Remember the question how badly do you really want this?

85. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Your ability to succeed is in direct proportion to the amount of work you're willing to put into the job. Wishing alone Will never get you.

84. The most effective way to do it, is to do it.

Amelia Earhart

To steal a famous advertising slogan from Nike - Just do it.”

83. It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.

Confucius

Goal setting, let's correct that, goal achievement is traditionally a marathon not a sprint. Do not be discouraged or give up when your goal is not reached overnight.
