CHAPTER ONE

UNDERSTANDING SUCCESS

Any Fool can know. The point is to understand” – Albert Einstein

The most distinguishing difference between a failure and a success is not a miracle, it is understanding. Understanding is the stuff that makes life beautiful and worth living. The success machinery can only work in your hand when you understand how it works. Hard work will not make a man successful unless he works hard with understanding. Smart work won’t produce unless you work smart with understanding. Understanding is the difference maker in life. Hear this story as told by Elaine Lindy from Alan Chinen’s book, In The Ever After: Fairy Tales and the Second Half of Life.

Once upon a time, there was an old man whose daughter was married to a handsome Youngman. The young couple led a happy life, except for one problem: the new husband spent all his time dreaming of a way to turn dirt into gold. In those days people who did this were known as alchemists. Soon enough , he ran through all of his inheritance, and the young wife had to struggle to buy food each day. Desperate, she begged her husband to find a job.

“But I am on the verge of a break through!” he insisted “When I succeed in turning dirt into gold, we’ll be rich beyond our wildest dreams!”

Finally the young wife went to her father to tell him about the problem. The old man was surprised to learn that his Son-in-law was an alchemist, but he promised to help his daughter and he asked to see the young man the next day. The young man arrived reluctantly, expecting a scolding. To his surprise, his father – in-law confided in him, “When I was young I, too was an alchemist!” The father-in-law asked about the young man’s work and the two of them spent the whole afternoon in animated conversation. Finally the old man cried, “why, you have done everything I did when I was your age! You are surely on the verge of a breakthrough. But you need one more ingredient in order to change dirt into gold, and I have only recently discovered this secret.” The old man paused. “I am too old to undertake the task, “he confessed. “It requires too much work”

“I can do it, dear father!” Cried the young man. “Hmm. Perhaps you can, “said the old man. He learned over and whispered, “The secret ingredient is a silver powder that grows on the back of bannana leaves. You must plant the bananas yourself because it’s important that you cast certain spells on the seeds. Then, when the plant grows, the powder on the leaves will become magical”

“How much powder do we need?” The young man asked. “Two pounds,” The old man replied. The son-in-law thought out loud. “Why, that would require hundreds of banana plants!”

‘Yes,” sighed the old man, “and that is why I cannot complete the work myself.”

“Do not fear!” said the young man, “I will!” And so the old man taught his son-in-law the magic spells and loaned him enough money to start the project.

The next day, the young man bought some land and cleared it. He planted the banana seeds just as the old man had told him to do and murmured over them the magic spells. Each day he examined the seedlings, keeping weeds and pests away. When the plants bare fruits he gently brushed the silver powder from the banana leaves, but there was scarcely any powder on each plant so the young man had to buy more land and cultivate more bananas. It took several years, but finally the young man collected two pounds of the magic dust. He rushed to his father – in- law’s house.

“I have the magic powder!” He cried with excitement.

“Wonderful!” rejoiced the old man. “Now I can show you how to turn dirt into gold! But first you must bring your wife here. We need her presence.”

The young man was puzzled, but obeyed. When his wife appeared, the old man asked his daughter, “while your husband was collecting the banana powder, what did you do with the banana?”

“Why, I sold them”, the daughter said, “and that’s how we’ve earned a living.”

“Did you save any money?” asked the father. “Yes”, she replied.

“May I see it?” asked the old man. So his daughter hurried home and returned with several bags. The old man opened them, saw that they were full of gold and poured the coins on the floor. Then he took a handful of dirt, and put it next to the gold.

“You see,” he said, turning to his son-in-law, “you have changed dirt into gold”.

This young man, like many of our youths today, had a dream of becoming stupendously rich and very successful. He had the ability needed to realise his dream but he did not understand what success is, so he could not apply his ability, skill, intelligence and energy to achieve his dream. The old man, without telling him directly, subjected him to the principle that produces success. When he complied, he saw his dream come true. At that very moment, the guy realised that success is not about wishing and day-dreaming, it is being and doing. It is about serving humanity with the gifts of God in you. It is finding fulfillment in what you do. It is about working serving humanity with the gifts of God in you. It is finding fulfillment in what you do. It is about working for a giving and not for a living – that is, being service-oriented, adding value to the lives of those within your sphere of influence.

Acres of Diamond

In his inspiring book, Acres of Diamond, the late founder of Temple University, USA, and Baptist Preacher, Russell Conwell, shared the story of a young man called Ali Hafed who had a farm land he was contented with. One day he went to a Persian Priest who told him what his life would look like if he had a diamond mine. He was told that with a diamond mine in his possession, he could literally see his children as monarchs because he would be richer than everybody.

On hearing this, the man became discontented with what he had, sold his farm and used the proceeds to travel around the world in search of diamond. After several years of unsuccessful search, he became despondent and killed himself. After some years, the same Persian Priest visited the farm land. When he entered the house he saw a diamond stone on the lintel of the house. He enquired if Ali Hafed had returned; the new owner of the farm land told him no and the priest asked him how he came about the diamond in his house,he told him that he saw the precious stone while tilling his farm. They both went to the farm land only to discover it was full of diamond. That acre of land located in india later became one of the biggest diamond mines in the world.

Ali Hafed desperately needed a diamond mine, but sadly, he did not know what a diamond looks like. Several people today are like Ali Hafed, they are desperately searching for success but they don’t know what success is, so they continue the search all through their lives without ever finding it.

What is Success?

The Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary defines being successful as “Achieving your aims or what was intended”. Generally, success is defined as the progressive realization of goals or objects that gives you joy and fulfillment in life.

This definition of success tells you that success is a journey and that that journey must be such that gives you fulfillment. Now if it must give you fulfillment it has to be a journey in the path of your purpose. That means success is progressively releasing your gifts and potentials to fulfill your purpose. That is, doing successfully what you were born to do.

You see, success is not accumulating money (true success will always bring money). There are several people with a lot of money who are not fulfilled, so they are not successful. Success is not in a place, there are beggars in America, Britain, china, South Africa etc. who cannot afford a meal a day. Success is not in a profession, there are poor Bankers, Lawyers, Doctors, Pilots and Pastors etc. who are already tired of life.

Success Is…

  1. Finding your purpose and fulfilling it. You are on earth for a reason. Life was given to you to carry out a specific assignment on earth. There is a need which only you can meet. Everything you need in life will answer to you the moment you start carrying out your assignment. For every divine vision there is a divine provision. Fulfilling your assignment is living your dream. It will give you a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction. It will give meaning and peace to your life. My discovery is that money follows impacts. Your personal economy is determined by or greatly by those whose lives you have touched in positive ways.

Let me tell you something: nothing on earth is more fulfilling and satisfying like finding your gift and channeling it towards services that make knowing that make positive differences in peoples lives. It gives a deep sense of satisfaction and joy. Don’t spend your life working for money, commit your life to doing works that will change peoples’ lives, fulfill destinies, improve systems and society and make the world a better place for the next generation. Aristotle says, “Where your gift meets the needs of the world, there lies your vocation”.

  1. Discovering and Releasing your Potentials. When metabolic waste products are not removed from the body they become toxic and adversely affect the smooth functioning of the body. The same is true of life in general; when your gifts and potentials are not utilized you become frustrated, unfulfilled and dissatisfied. A career line that does not allow the continuous discovery and release of your God given abilities will end up rendering your life meaningless. That is why I strongly advise that you don’t work for money, but meaning. Your primary business in life is not to amass money but to add value to people life. I have discovered that the more value you add to peoples lives the more money you have (this happens when you sensibly exchange values).

God’s business for you is the use of your gift to meet the needs of mankind. Only your gift can meet the needs of the world not your job. Only your gift can give you fulfillment in life and not your job. The story is told of a young man whose parent pressurized him to become a medical doctor. After practicing medicine for years, his host community decided to organize an event in his honour to celebrate his contributions to the health of the people of the community. After honouring him with the community’s most prestigious title, the young man was called to give his acceptance speech. When he got to the podium he bursted into a loud cry to the embarrassment of everyone present, when asked why he was crying, he said he had spent all his life pursuing the dream of his parent. He told them that he had always wanted to be a musician and not a medical doctor and publicly requested that his parent should allow him to pursue his dream.

Friends, true success is living your dream. And you cannot fulfill your dream without trading with your God given potentials.

  1. Living Your Dream. Look at your life very well, does it reflect your dream? Is it the life you planned to live? Friends, life is too short to live in frustration. Success is progressively taking steps towards the realization of your dream. Success is seeing your dream come true: Friends, no matter what your achievement in life is, if you are not living your dream you are not successful.

The number one silent killer in the corporate world today is stress and stress is spending a long time doing what you don’t really like. Not living your dream is living in prisons. Many people today are prisoners of their jobs and careers. If your present work is not a fulfillment of your dream then you will have a tough time achieving true success in it. Your true work will make retirement unnecessary for you. I can’t imagine myself retiring from speaking and writing. What else will I be doing? I cannot dream of a more fulfilling careerline than the one I am already engaged in. Friends, dare to live your dreams. Never forget that you have just one life. Don’t live your life to fulfill others peoples’ or the society’s definition of success. As far as God is concerned, you are only successful when you dedicate your life to doing the things he created you to do in your generation.

  1. Achieving Satisfactory Results: In what you do, progress in the right direction is the hallmark of success. The bible admonishes,

Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks,

And look well to thy herds. For riches are not

For ever: and doth the crown endure to every generation?” Proverbs 27:23-24.

From time to time take stock of your life to assess your level of progress, see if you are really achieving satisfactory progress in whatever you are doing. This is so because the state of your work reveals the state of your life. If your work is not progressing, your life is not progressing.

Achieving satisfactory result in your work will mean that you challenge status-quo, improve your skill, acquire more knowledge and develop competence and expertise in your fields.

Ralph Waldo Emerson is his 1871 essay wrote,

If a man writes a better book, or preaches a better sermon, or make a better mouse trap than his neighbour, even if he builds his house in the woods the world will make a beaten path to his door”.

Friends, there is profit in every labour, but it is up to you to cultivate and develop the necessary skills needed to tap into the treasure of your calling. Success is not in what you do nor where you stay, success is result of doing what you do exceptionally well and positively impact, transform and uplift the lives of people around you.

CHAPTER TWO

DISCOVERING SUCCESS

There is a gold mine hidden in every life. Nature never made a failure. Everyman has success hidden away in his souls. No one else can find it but himself…the exceptional people are those who develop what is within them.”---E.W. KENYON

The thing that will make way for you in the world is your gift. Your gift is the agent God has appointed to bring you into the company of great men and women. Discovering your gift and trading with it is the key to real success. The key to achieving and accomplishing everything you desire is inside you. Within you lies everything you need to become your highest dream in life. There is nothing you need that is outside you. The money, fame, honour and influence you are looking for is within you. The more discoveries you make about your life, the more your chances of success. In the previous chapter I told you that success is adding value to peoples’ lives. You cannot add value to peoples’ lives unless you know what you carry.

Your success in life is hidden in the dreams and visions of your heart. The Bible says the well spring of life flows from within--- your heart. Your search for success must begin form within you. It must begin from what you have--- your talents and visions and where you are; your immediate environment, the needs of those around you and the opportunities that exist around you. Global success begins with local steps. True success is in finding your gift and doing something with it.

Fedex: A Success Discovered!

As an undergraduate in the University, when others were busy thinking of where to work after school, Frederick Wallace Smith was thinking about how to serve his generation with the gift of God in him. He had an idea, a vision that would later change the world. While in Yale University, he wrote an economics term paper describing his vision. In the paper, he outlined how overnight delivery service can be achieved in a computer information age. Reportedly, his professor gave him C and told him that the idea was not feasible. After school, he joined the military. While serving in the U.S.Marine Corps, Frederick carefully observed the procurement and delivery procedures in the U.S. military logistics system, fine-tuning his dream with the knowledge gained. In 1970, he purchased the controlling interest in an air-craft maintenance company, Ark Aviation sales, and by 1971 turned the company’s focus to trading used jets. Having prepared the ground for the take-off of his dream, on June 18, 1971, Smith founded Federal Express and on April 17, 1973, it opened for business delivering 186 packages overnight to 25 cities in the United States.

Follow your passion and you will definitely find good success. Don’t surrender your dream to what those around you are saying. John C. Maxwell in his book, Talent Is Never Enough, writes. “The only way you can really achieve anything of significance is to really want it. Passion provides that.” He went on to share three ways you can discover your passion.

  1. What do you sing about?

  2. What do you cry about?

  3. What do you dream about?

The reason so many people today are stranded in life’s journey is because they are looking for success outside themselves. They don’t understand that true success begins from within. Friends, true success is in finding your gift and passionately and enthusiastically serving it to the world.

Ralph Waldo Emerson observed, “Every great and commanding movement in the annals of the world is the triumph of enthusiasm”. You cannot be great doing what you don’t really like. You cannot be fulfilled tasking yourself with a job that neither gives you joy nor a sense of worth. The most frustrated people I know are people who imprison themselves in a job they don’t like just for the not-too-sensible reason of having money to survive. Life is not worth living unless you are living to change the world with your passion.

Aliko Dangote: Running with passion.

The Dangote Group is arguably one of the pillars of Nigeria’s economy. Its interest covers the Oils and Gas, Transportation, Banking, Textile, Building, Telecommunications etc. sectors. It is one of the largest consortiums in Africa. This group according to recent statistics employs about 12,000 people. The man at the helm of its affairs, Aliko Dangote, is one of the richest in Africa and makes over 95% of his money from the Nigerian economy. Dangote’s secret is his passion for what he is doing. Business has been his interest right from childhood. In an interview he said, “I can remember when I was in primary school, I would go and buy cartons of sweets (sugar boxes) and I would start selling them just to make money. I was so interested in business even at that time”. You cannot make a mark doing what you don’t love. There is something you have that can make you great in that very locality. You need to understand that success principles are universal, they can work for anybody anywhere. The Bible says, “Moreover the profit of the earth is for all.” (Eccl.5). Friends, the profit of the earth is for everybody, if you are broke, it is your fault. God says, “Hey, I have made the earth a profitable place for all the dwellers of the earth”. So that means if your life is void of profit you need to check yourself very well.

The profits and treasures of this earth are accessed through the gift of God in you. Jesus Christ described the earth as a market place.

Where unto then shall I liken the men of this generation? And to what are they like? They are like unto children sitting in the market place (Luke 7:31-32).

Friends, the earth is a market place and as such, your value is determined by what you’ve got to offer.

Because No Man Hired Us

In a parable in Matthew 20:1-18, we learned talked about a certain man who went out to hire labourers at certain hour and saw people standing idle in the market place. Now that is the condition of many people today, they are in the market but they are not offering anything. And what is their only excuse, “because no man hired us.” Go into the street you will see them some of them are SSCE, OND, HND, B.SC, MBA and even PhD holders. I can hear God telling them, “I have made the earth profitable for you, and I have loaded you with talents and skills to take your share of the earth’s profit. Why are you still standing there idling your life away? Go and trade with your potentials, do something with what you’ve got”.

Friends, life should not be a cycle of frustration for you. The other day a lady was complaining that eight years after her graduation from the university she hasn’t gotten any job and was blaming it all on the government. I could not believe what I was reading. How can a person surrender her destiny to a political office holder that is not aware of her existence? Listen, I want you to consciously decide today that you will not allow your life to be lost in the masses. How can you be waiting for others to employ you when you’ve got what the world is looking for? You have talents, gifts, potentials and there is a dream in your heart; settle down now and make your life work, success resides within you. Don’t let anybody make you look like a failure. The great empires you see in the world today once existed within their founders. Let me quickly show you how to discover the success in you:

  1. YOUR PASSION IS YOUR SUCCESS

In the end, you will be remembered for your passion. It is what will energize your talent. It is what will empower you to make your mark”. John C. Maxwell.

Passion is the fuel of life. The world is ruled by men and women of passion. It is impossible to make a notable mark in this world without passion. One way to discover a worthwhile career for yourself is by searching out and pursuing what ignites your passion. It is by asking yourself “what am I passionate about?” Passion is what you do that makes you feel that you are positively affecting humanity. Passion brings a sense of fulfillment. passionate people have fun with their works. The rule of seven-to-five, going to work by 7am and rushing back by 5pm does not apply to them. They resume earlier than others, work harder and smarter than others, and close later than others. Why? Because they enjoy what they are doing.

Authors Robert J. Kriegel and Louis Patler cite a study of 1,500 people over twenty years that shows how passion makes a significant difference in a person’s career:

At the outset of the study, the group was divided into Group A, 83 percent of the sample, who were embarking on a career chosen for the prospects of making money now in order to do what they wanted later, and Group B, the other 17 percent of the sample, who had chosen their career path for the reverse reason, they were going to pursue what they wanted to do now and worry about money later.

The data showed some startling revelations:

  • At the end of 20 years, 101 of the 1,500 had become millionaires.

  • Of the millionaires, all but one – 100 out of 101 – were from Group B, the group that had chosen to pursue what they loved!

Have you discovered that the day your heart stop beating you will be a dead person. The same way your biological heart beat controls your biological life, the passions of your heart controls the life of your destiny. Study Forbe’s list of the world’s richest people, you will discover that they are all driven by passion. A wise man gave this advice –“find something you like to do so much that you will gladly do it for nothing and if you learn to do it well, someday people will be happy to pay you for it”.

The secret of great success and excellence is doing what you love doing. Napoleon Hill gave this career advice, “find out what you really love to do, and then find a way to make a good living doing it”. Follow your passion, and you will find your green pasture.

  1. WHAT GIVES YOU THE MOST SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN LIFE?

There are many things that will catch my eye, but there are only a few that catch my heart. It is those I consider to pursue”. --Tim Redmond.

Success becomes easy when you prioritize your life according to those things which account for most of your success and happiness in life. This is true because whatever has been responsible for your success in the past is likely to be responsible for your success in the future.

Bill Gates became the world’s richest man in his 20s, he co-founded the Microsoft Corporation, which Howard Rothman ranked number one in his book, 50 Companies That Changed The World. In an interview he granted Director Magazine published in the April 1999 edition of the magazine, Bill Gates was asked, “How old were you when you started making money out of computers?”

He replied, “I was 15 when we really started making money. 15 and 16 we did very well…” He was so successful and happy with what he was doing that at age 20, he drop out of Harvard University to co-found Microsoft.

One way to succeed very well in life is to find what you have always succeeded in, build a corporation around it and reach the world through it. One fact I want you to note is this – whatever you are happy doing, the things you do that gives you joy and fulfillment will surely bring you success if you do it long enough and intelligently. It is a guarantee.

  1. YOUR SUCCESS IS WHAT YOU LEARN AND DO WITHOUT MUCH EFFORT.

It is difficult to succeed in what you find very difficult learning and doing. The reason is

this– success is rooted or built on understanding. You can never excel in what you don’t understand. A young man in his early 30s came to tell me of his plan to read law. I asked him why he wanted to read law, he said for fame. He told me he has always desired to be famous and well-known. I sat him down and explained to him that fame is not in what you do but how well you understand and do what you do. Friends, fame is the result of positive impact. Success is a product of understanding. If what you want to do requires that the soul goes out of you before understanding it, dump it. That is not running away from challenges. It is a creative abandonment. You are simply saving your wit, time and energy from being wasted in a thing that holds no future for you.

What I mean is this – if the time, effort and energy put into a thing are consistently producing little outputs it simply means you are heading for a breakdown, quit now!

You should understand that success in life is not determined by what you do, but what you know about what you do, that is, how well you understand what you do. Eccl 10:15 says

The labour of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city”.

That is to say a thing whose “how to” you don’t understand will never lead you to success. God wants you to be a star in whatever you do. So choose a career line that will reveal the star in you. I will rather be a star sweeper whose work is affecting lives around the world than be an unknown Lawyer, Engineer or Medical Doctor with no proof of my impact in any life. Friends, the world only recognizes the best. Mediocre performance holds no future for any man. Do what you can excel in and excel in what you do. Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote in 1871,

“If a man can write a better book, or preach a better sermon, or make a better mouse trap than his neighbour even if he builds his house in the woods the world will make a beaten path to his door”. The point is this-- be the best in whatever you do. Devote yourself to what you know best. Let the world know you for what you do, stand out. Become a reference in that field, become an authority in it. Be impactful enough to be noticed. All these are possible when you devote your life to doing what you can master with ease and do with excitement.

SUCCESS FACTS ACTION STEPS

CHAPTER THREE

SUCCESS BEGINS WITH PREPARATION

Before anything else, preparation is the key to success.” Alexander Graham Bell

It was Abraham Lincoln who said,” I will study and prepare myself, and one day when the time comes, I will be ready”. Abraham Lincoln had serial failures yet he prepared himself. He had less than six months of formal education yet he was preparing himself. His mother died when he was nine years old yet he prepared for his time. He lost an election to the Illinois State legislature in 1832 yet he was preparing for his time. He failed to obtain a desired appointment as commissioner of the General Land Office in Illinois in 1849 yet he kept preparing for his time. He lost two senate races (1855 and 1859), yet he did not stop preparing for his time. In 1856 he lost a vice presidential nomination but he kept preparing for his time. He lost his four-year-old son in 1850 but he was still preparing for his time. His father died in 1851 and he still held on to his preparation for his time. His did come and when it came he was ready. He was elected as the 16th President of the United States of America. And because he prepared himself, he became, perhaps, the most influential president in America time. He taught himself mathematics, read classical literatures, and worked on his writing style. He took the Bible as his model for writing and speaking, and disciplined himself to produce crisp, clear, simple sentence. Friends nothing just happens. Success does not just happen; it has to be prepared for. There is nothing you cannot accomplish with your life if only will study, train and prepare for it. Brain Tracy says, “There is nothing that you cannot accomplish if you’ll invest the effort to get yourself ready for the success that you desire. And there is nothing that can stop you but your own lack of preparation.”

Preparation Unlocks Success

A notable journalist in Nigeria asked President Goodluck Jonathan, Nigeria’s President, this beautiful question when the president turned 55years, “From your emerging as Deputy Governor, vice President to being President, is this your name, Goodluck at work? Hear Mr. Jonathan’s insightful answer:

“Everything is Goodluck but no matter the extent of good luck you have, you still have to prepare and show yourself by getting involved…. If my father called me Goodluck but I refused to go to school and took no interest in politics, would I ever emerge as running mate to Gov. Alamieseigha? So beyond luck, one had developed oneself and be well positioned to make use of opportunities that comes one’s way.”

Preparation is the key that unlocks success. You cannot reign in what you are not ready for. “In all matters,” says Cicero, “Before beginning, a diligent preparation should be made”. Some of the greatest failures I know are talented people.

They fail because they think that talent on its own is enough to make a person successful in life. But friends, the truth is that talent is not enough. Talents don’t sell much, only skills do and preparation is what transforms a talent to a marketable skill. You see, nothing carries much value in its crude state. Talent is like crude oil, its value is only revealed after it has be refined. A Spanish proverb says “ A man that is prepared has half won the battle.” Failure in life has its root in lack of preparation.

Many people want to be champions but the trouble is that they are not ready to pay the price champions pay. Alan Armstrong reveals the secret of champions. In this word “Champions do not become champions when they win the event, but in the hours, weeks, months and years they spend preparing for it. The victorious performance itself is merely demonstration of their championship character.” Olympic stars work behind the scene months and years ahead of the event. They only go in there to reveal what they have been doing behind the lights and camera. Let me ask you this--what are you doing about where you are going? The kingdom, says Jesus, does not come by observation. In the same way, success does not come by talking but by preparing for it and working for it. A young man once asked a successful businessman how he could be more successful faster. The business man told him that the key to his own success has been to “get good” at his job.

The young man said, “I’m already good at what I do.”

The businessman the said, “well, get better!”

The young man said, “Well, I’m already better than most people.” To this the business replied

“Then be the best.”

That is how you attain success. Become good at what you do, if you are already good,

then get better. When you become better, step up and become the best in your class and

in your field. But the key to this is preparation. Consistent preparation is the difference between, mediocrity and excellence. It will interest you to know that in the school of success, preparation will always remain a

compulsory course. It will never become an option because life itself is about preparation.

As a baby you prepared to sit, after sitting you prepared to crawl after that you prepared

to walk and then run.The most favoured and blessed people in life are often the most prepared.

Preparation is the heart of success

There can be no enduring success without planning and preparing for it. There is no

substitute for it, not preparing for success, is preparing for failure. On the subject of

planning and preparation, Orison S. Marden wrote,

“No matter what your vocation, you must keep a clear head and steady judgment if you would attain anything like eminence in it. You must have a clean-cut program and work by it, and not a cross purposes, thus counteracting your own effort. This is a day of thinkers, of planners. It is the deep systematic thinkers with a plan and with the executive ability to carry it out that succeeds.

What would you think of a musician who would attempt to lead a great orchestra with no definite plan as to what they should play? Supposes the leader get his men together and say:

‘Well , boys we are all ready to begin. ‘But’, says the violinist, ‘we have no music . What are

We going to play?’ ‘Oh, we will just start in and play something .We will come out all

right.’ What would there be but a pandemonium (lawless confusion) of harsh, discordant,

jangling notes, which would drive the audience to distraction, and the trained ears of the musicians would suffer most. Yet everywhere we see splendid men and women throwing away precious energy because they have not learned to work by a program. It is the habit of systematic thinking, methodical working, that makes available whatever ability a man has. Without this, he is always throwing his efforts away.”

Life only gives you what you prepare and plan for. The future is like a treasure box, it contains treasures of inestimable values. But it has one rule –what you put in is what you take out. In computer language it is known as Garbage in Garbage out (GIGO). The Bible calls it seed time and harvest –the law of sowing and reaping. Philosophers call it the law of cause and effect .Apostle paul said, “Be not deceived, God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap’’ Gal. 6.7 (KJV). Preparation is the time of sowing. It is very important for you understand that you cannot become what you did not prepare for. That is to say your manifestation in life is controlled by your preparation. What you put forth determines what you show forth.

Preparation is the seed that creates the fruit called success .Stop worrying about the fruit and start taking care of the seed. Life, my friends, is about sowing and reaping. After a church service one day, somebody told me that a sister in our church was terribly sick in the hospital. Immediately, I rushed to the hospital to see her. I prayed with her and she got her healing. I then asked her what happened. She told me how, for a long time she pursued money and ignored the idea of going to church (even after visitations by the brethren). She told me that even when she used to come to church she did not use to pay tithe. She then told me, “Pastor do you know that this sickness ate all the money I made in including my savings?” She realized that she was reaping the harvest of disobedience to God’s word. This dear lady changed. She moved from that hospital to church that day and sublimed herself fully to God and since then she has been walking in blessing.

I shared this story to show you how binding the law of sowing and reaping is on our lives. If you sow quality preparation today, the future will welcome you with beautiful success but if you leave your life to chance you will certainly end up without a chance. Brian Tracy writes, “In everything you do, preparation is the key. If you want to be ready for success, you have to plant the seeds well in advance of the harvest you expect. Do what the winners do: think on paper. Memorize the winner’s creed, ‘Everything counts’. Everything you do is either moving you toward your goals or away from them. Everything is either helping you or hurting you. Nothing is neutral. Everything counts.”

Everything counts! That is why you must not leave anything to chance. Every step carries a consequence that is why you must program your steps toward the future of your dream. Friends, preparation is the lifeblood of success. Greatness is a product of preparation. The Bible says Jotham became mighty because he prepared his ways before the Lord (2 Chronicles 27:6) .Before he became, he prepared. So you prepare to become but many today are approaching it otherwise - they are trying to become before preparing. Friends, follow the order – PREPARE TO BECOME
