On Earth As It Is In Heaven

There was a time not too long ago when I wrote “daily” inspirational emails to a few folks here from my home in the “Great White North” ( Canada ). Referring to my beginnings as a writer as humble, would be the understatement of all understatements. “Ignorance is bliss” at times!

Technically speaking, I had no idea what I was doing to the point, where I had no idea that I had no idea! While still employed, therefore working at the time, I would sit at my laptop, five hours per day, every single day, to prepare five minutes of reading material, with the prayerful hope that God would transform my meager offering into a blessing to others. While the productivity was no doubt lacking, the effort and passion were not. I would race home from work with one thing on my mind to encompass my evening: “Write”! My time at work would be spent thinking about the subject matter I wanted to write about later in the day. So, it quickly became a “24-7” dynamic in my life that would spread into every aspect of my breathing on planet earth! I often would write regarding the experiences I would have in God throughout my days. “Availability”, I was learning, was all God asked for. Day after day without fail, He opened doors of opportunity. I simply and thankfully walked through them. A lifestyle was being established by God that was motivated by one singular thought from my perspective: The desire that, “whatever” you God, have in mind for my life today in heaven, may it be done on earth.

As it turned out, and to put the time frame in its graphically proper perspective, that season in my life would last three years - that’s over one thousand days - that’s over five thousand hours of writing! And that was all preparation for writing E-Books. Did I know at the time? Well, that would suggest I knew what an E-Book was, which I didn’t. But God did! As for me? I was far too per-occupied trying to find the next letter I needed to locate on the keyboard!

In the background of my life, God was taking care of the future but it was my responsibility in the immediate, to find the next letter. He took care of the rest! This is book “forty-one” in less than four months. Isn’t it amazing what God can do with simple availability!

I’ve often wondered why God didn’t simply recruit someone who would have been qualified from moment one, seeing as I couldn’t have been less qualified. He would have saved a lot of time, don’t you think. Well I’ve surmised, and this is no more than a “perhaps”: The one who was qualified, wasn’t available. I may have been granted this wonderful opportunity by default!

Who Me?

That’s what Moses said when God found him hiding on the backside of a mountain. God had asked Moses to deliver an important message to the Pharaoh. The Pharaoh was who Moses was hiding from for a very good reason.

He had killed an Egyptian guard while defending one of his enslaved countrymen. To make matters worse, Moses stuttered making him the least likely candidate for the task at hand. Thus, Who me? God assured Moses that this scenario was far less a ME and far more a WE! God promised His accompaniment and based on that, Moses made himself available.

Three and a half years ago I was the “Prodigal Son” returning home after a very long absence from fellowship. Back then, the thought of walking in a church sent chills down my spine and for good reason. Reasons that truly don’t matter anymore.

I can, on some minor level relate to Moses. He had been behind that mountain for quite a while before God showed up with His request. I believe Moses was committed to staying behind that mountain for the rest of his life if necessary. Then God changed his mind and his entire life and legacy in the process. The reason Moses is to us, who he is today? He made himself vulnerable and left his mountain of self-thought protection and chose to trust his God. This was no small decision. If he was wrong, Moses was going to die!

Likewise with myself, God showed up, seemingly out of nowhere with a request. It had been a very long time since we last chatted, but there are certain voices you never forget. His would be a the very top of that list! Moses didn’t question “who are you” he said “who me”.

Well, over time I had built a “mountain” of reasons to consider God’s request insane at best. “Bill, I want you back in church. Not just any church, but a specific church”.

Crosslands in New Market, which was where my sister and brother-in-law attended, was God’s designated landing spot for my questioning and fearful soul. Church to me, was much the same as the Pharaoh was to Moses! So my “who me” seemed fittingly appropriate as a response.

Then my Lord, who I was surprised to realize, was still my Lord, said: “I’m not asking you to trust anyone but Me. Can you do that? Be assured, I’ll be going with you”.

Well, the next Sunday, sweating all the way up highway 404 from my home in Scarborough, at age sixty six and feeling older with every passing minute, I arrived with full intentions of finding a seat in the very back row and surviving what I believed would be torture. I knew all it would take, to confirm to me the factual content of my mountain would be for one person to say the wrong thing. Thin ice to be walking on! A gamble with much to lose at stake. But I was promised that Jesus would be there with me so I was there, while having no idea what to expect.

Amazingly to me, all went well. Thinking back, I shouldn’t have been quite so amazed. I did have His word! Besides, I hadn’t left church life because of Him.

That success, would compile into a list of successful Sundays, one after another. I was glad to be back. My mountain was crumbling one Sunday at a time.

But here’s the moral and point to this true story, as it relates to “writing”: It was at Crosslands, I would meet the initial recipients of those early daily emails. Until then I hadn’t written a truly significant word in my life. That would be the beginning of what is now: Forty one E-Books and over two thousand downloads later. If you knew me you would understand how amazing that is!

It’s a chilling thought to me when considered: What if I didn’t say yes to My Lord’s request to trust Him? I was certainly scared enough to say no. In a likewise manner, what if Moses had done the same and refused his God’s request to be trusted? He was afraid as well. Conjecture perhaps, but never the less chilling, when realized how profoundly important our Yes’s are.

As it was with me, I wasn’t saying yes from a place of strength. The fact is I was quite the mess. I wasn’t saying yes because I thought it was a good idea. Just the opposite was my opinion.

I said yes in spite of me not because of me! I said yes based on the One who was asking, not what He was asking! Sometimes we are called to say YES in spite of ourselves. Those are the times when it may be most important to say YES!

So, bottom line and back to availability: Short and simple: Our availability qualifies our usability. God transcends our shortcomings and in-sufficiency’s with His all-sufficiency. Every YES that is spoken has far more futuristic meaning than we could ever imagine. So, when it comes to our walk with Jesus, we just keep looking for the next letter on the keyboard and before we know it, we have written a story, one letter at a time! Better said; One YES at a time! Available 24/7. There’s nothing this world can offer to compare to its reality. An intersecting with heaven on a regular basis lifestyle! A seeing God making ways where there are no ways! It’s amazing and available to all for the choosing! In the Gospels we see fisherman and tax collectors saying YES. How unqualified is that? Those same folks, who once were considered by many to be the dregs of society, are now called Apostles! Oh what God can do with available people is unlimited!

My Ministry Into Our Ministry

Mark 6 - 38 & 41: “How many loaves do you have He asked?” “Go and see”. When they found out they said, “Five and two fish”. Taking the five loaves and two fish and looking up to heaven He gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to His disciples to DISTRIBUTE to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all”. ( Five thousand plus, were fed that day! )

In the biblical story of the “fishes and loaves”, I so clearly see three dynamics in play to achieve the desired completion of the heavenly orchestrated equation. The young boy GAVE what little he had, our Lord then MULTIPLIED it, and the disciples then DISTRIBUTED it.

It’s interesting to note that Jesus, after the multiplying didn’t say, “Come and get it”. What He did say was, “Everyone find a place to sit on the grass and I’ll bring it to you, through my own”. Folks, He loves to involve us. He loves to make us matter! We are blessed beyond measure to be written into, His stories! Just imagine: Invited by Him to participate in His plans for others!

From the inception of the idea of writing books to be made available to “all freely”, there has never been a moment when I haven’t been aware of its ministry context. I could easily be seen as the “young boy” in the story. Jesus has most certainly multiplied my meager offering to Him.

So may I invite and encourage you to be a distributor of that which He has multiplied, thereby elevating “My Ministry” into “Our Ministry”, thus completing “His Ministry”. There’s something about that idea that sounds “perfect” to my heart!

We all have friends, family, work mates, school mates, etc. I’ve included a simple directional on “how to find” the “fishes and loaves”. Please feel free to share “what you eat” with others. You have no idea where it could lead to! That young boy’s mother could never have dreamed, what that little lunch she had prepared for her son on that fateful morning, would produce!

Thanks in advance. Bill Taylor
