Visions are real. Many years ago, when I heard preachers talked of the visions they saw and it came to pass, I wondered if what they were saying will ever happen in my life. Few years before the year 2000, I had few revelations and word of knowledge on a limited basis, but from January of the year 2000, the Lord put me into the greater dimensions of visions and revelations.

I have had countless visions and revelations from the Lord. Some of them were the revelations of what happened in the past and what is happening in the present (word of knowledge) and some of them were what will happen in the future (word of wisdom). They come through visions, dreams, voice of the Holy Spirit, prophecy, and by a knowing or sensing in my heart; God speaks through various ways. Find out the common way or method He usually speak to you and develop it, yet be open to receive from Him through other ways as He speaks.

God promised to make His people to see visions.

And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men SHALL SEE VISIONS, Your old men shall dream dreams. And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy.” (Acts 2:17).

Just as all believers can pray for the sick to get healed, all believers can speak in tongues; all believers can cast out demons, and they all can prophesy. In the same way, all believers can see visions. The only difference between the manifestations of vision in the life of a believer and in the life of a prophet is the frequency of the manifestation. Seer prophets see visions consistently and in a higher dimension. “ have also spoken by the prophets, And have multiplied visions; I have given symbols through the witness of the prophets" (Hosea 12:10).

Visions, dreams, revelations and prophecies influence lives. It keeps you going in the right path of life or Ministry. These would save you from danger and death, and lead you to knowing, receiving and acting to receive your blessings. (1 Cor. 2:13).

Visions, dreams and revelations are gates into the spiritual world. Through a vision, you will be able to see and commune in the Spirit realm. Through a vision, you will be able to receive accurately what had happened in the past and what will happen in the future. It is a burden that produces visions. Each time I receive a burden about something concerning myself, my ministry, the church, nations, or for other people, I will withdraw from people; I will withdraw from much talking to get a quiet place so that I can be alone with God. As I press in seeking an answer to my prayer, the Holy Spirit, through the burden, will show me a vision. When you are in an atmosphere to receive a vision, do not be in a haste to leave the environment and do not be carried away by the awesomeness of the first vision He shows you. Learn to wait. God may still show you more. Learn to write down each vision you receive.

Most times, God speaks before showing. To me, the voice of the Holy Spirit is the highest level of prophetic revelation; hearing God by heart to be led by your heart. This is the primary way Jesus was led. Most of what God SHOWS us is the PHOTOS of the silent words He puts in our hearts. The silent words would come as if you were sensing a thought of something. Most times, we don’t push our mind to really know what we are receiving or to act on what we are receiving. We miss His gentle voice because we only want to hear the audible voice. Learn to follow what the Holy Spirit is placing in your heart to do.

Vision and dreams is a strategic weapon the Lord has given to us in these last days to fight and to overcome the enemy’s strategies that is influencing the church. Victory will come when God is in the battle. When God speaks and you obey, there will be victory and blessings. God speaks through visions. Vision helps believers to do God’s will. God communicates His will and purposes through vision. It is very important because it helps you to know God’s mind. God has a will; a program for your life and Ministry.

Vision brings accuracy in our Ministries. People easily understand a message when it comes in a pictorial form. Most times, we don’t easily forget the message in pictorial forms. Vision is important because it is in the seeing. Vision empowers and stirs you to accomplish a purpose. When the Holy Spirit brings a vision of a purpose He gives you the power to fulfil the purpose.

The power of the Holy Spirit in the vision will create movement, enthusiasm and speed in you to fulfil the task. You cannot do it until you see it. Great destinies and assignments begin with a vision. Vision helps you to know and intercept impending danger through intercession. True intercessors need the visions of God in this season. You need it.

Types of Vision and Spiritual Sensing

Vision is real. You can see countless visions. It is the Holy Spirit who gives vision. The Holy Spirit has a language; visions, dreams, a voice or revelation. These are the means through which He speaks. (Acts 2:17-18).

There are different types of visions:

(i) Open visions

(ii) Traces

(iii) Inner or spiritual vision

(iv) Vision of the night

(v) Panoramic

(vi) Translation

(i) Open Vision

In an open vision, ones physical senses are not suspended. It is as if you are watching a movie from a television screen. It will be so clear that you cannot miss a word or an action from your mind when it comes. God brings this by the Holy Spirit to show us about important issues. I discovered that in most cases what is shown will happen exactly as it was shown. It is not like other visions and dreams where one has to sometimes “strive” to interpret and to carefully apply the revelation in the vision.

Prophet Daniel had it. He saw and heard clearly when an angel appeared to him. When he was seeing and hearing from the angel in the vision, people around him did not see but a great quaking fell on them, and they ran away. (Daniel 10:7). God opened the eye of Elisha’s servant who was afraid of their enemies and he saw in an open vision the mountain full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha to protect them (2 Kings 6:16-17). Divine visitation falls under this type of vision. When angels or Jesus visits you physically, it is in the realm of open vision.

(ii) Trance

A trance is when you are in a state where you are neither awake nor asleep. You are in between and suddenly you are lost into another realm; you are lost into the Spirit realm where you are given a message. It is always like you are in a movie. Sometimes you will both SEE and HEAR in the Spirit at the same time. Your eyes are wide awake after the vision and you will know when you left and when you came back to your physical senses.

One characteristic of a trance is that you will be involved in what is happening in the vision. Peter had a trance in Acts 10:9-20. He saw unclean animals coming down from heaven to him and heard a voice saying, ‘arise and eat.’ Trance is movable while inner vision or spiritual vision is immovable.

The devil could also give a trance; but God’s trances are easy to know and interpret. You will know God’s trance by a sense of an awesome presence of the Holy Spirit around you after its reception. You will know that it is from God and will be fully convinced that it is from God. When you are confused and do not know whether the trance is from God or not, it is likely not from God. The vision may look so ordinary to you; you may think they make no sense, but they are real. It could make a whole lot of difference about something great in your life or Ministry. Sometimes when you are back from it, the Spirit of prayer, worship or silent thanksgiving will flow from your heart. Sometimes, when you are back from work or school, you will suddenly fall into a trance while trying to take a short nap.

(iii) Spiritual Vision

In this type of vision we see with our spiritual eyes. Some people call it “inner vision” because one sees it with the inner eye, the spiritual eye. Some call it hidden or mini-vision. It comes mostly while you are praying and suddenly you are lost in the Spirit for seconds. The vision is in a photo form and the activities are immovable. They come in snap-shots. Unlike a trance vision where the events are movable, the events in spiritual vision are static or immovable. It comes and goes sharply and immediately. Some forms of spiritual vision come gently and unfolds gradually that you will need a little patient to wait for it to finish unfolding.

Most times, you will know what the vision means after its reception. A photo can be worth a million meaning. As simple as this vision is, it is very legitimate. They are so real. Be careful to take decisions by this especially major ones until you are skilful in understanding it. If you are not careful, watchful and sensitive, it will come and go and you’ll think it is your imagination. I have seen several believers who did not know it was a real vision; they thought that it was their imagination. They do not know that when we become born again, God transforms our imaginations and would not remove it from our minds. God uses our imaginations to form images (visions). I have used my sanctified imagination and heard God speak to me in several ways. When you become born again, God will not destroy your imagination; the part of your mind that produces pictures. Paul encourages us to renew our minds and not to destroy it (Rom. 12:2). The more you spend your time in prayers, in the Word and in meditation for an extended period of time, your spirit will be open and will dominate your mind (the place of imaginations) and then you will receive from God.

It is advisable to immediately write down what you received or else you may forget. I have missed so many great revelations because of negligence in pencilling them down. Paul had it when he saw Ananias coming to pray for him to receive his sight. At that time Paul was blind when he was struck by a bright light from heaven on his way to Damascus. Paul, with his eyes closed, saw a vision. In another place, he saw this simple vision of a man from Macedonia beckoning on him to come over and help them. (Acts 16:9).

(iv) Vision of the Night

The vision of the night or night vision is a type of a vision. It is not an ordinary dream but a higher level of dream; though it comes by a dream-like experience. A dream is what you see in your sleep. When you are awake, you remember the event you saw. Vision of the night could come to your spirit either in the morning, afternoon or at night. It is when you are asleep and a revelation is given to you. It will be so real that you will awake suddenly after receiving it. In most cases, you will get up from your bed to sit down or stand up and you will feel an awesome presence around you. It could be given to you for a direction, encouragement or warning of a coming attack. If it is an attack, you need to prayerfully deal with the issue. Do not wait till the next day to call believers to join you. It came to you at that time because the devil has just started devising it. And pray it through until you are convinced your prayer is answered. God could use this to bring a major issue about your life, ministry, family and nations to you. Daniel had a night vision. (Daniel 2:19). Its major characteristic is that it vanishes sharply. Isaiah said that the distress that will come on Ariel will be like a dream of a night vision. (Isaiah 29:7).

(v) Translation

This is what I call, “the third heaven experience.” This is when the Holy Spirit literally carries your spirit to see events in some physical regions of the earth or outside the planet earth. Sometimes, you will be carried to a place in the spirit to pray for the sick people while in the physical these sick people will receive their healings. The spirit realm is real and controls the physical realm.

In the above different types of vision explained, God may show you visions that will require interpretation. But in translation vision, most times what you see or hear is direct and so clear and accurate that you may not need interpretation of such an experience. There is going to be more of this kind of vision in these seasons. You can affect nations from where you are because there is no distance in the spirit. (2 Cor.12:1-2).

(vi) Panoramic Vision

Panoramic vision is a prolonged open vision or trance. The encounter could last for thirty minutes, hours or days. As you are receiving the revelation, it can pause, and you can go and eat or do other things and still come back to continue from the very point the revelation stopped. And sometimes, even when you are talking with people or while eating or taking your bath, the scene or movie will continue to play in your spirit. John the beloved who wrote the Book of Revelations had series of this type of vision.

Visions are real. Jesus saw visions and so were the apostles. But vision is not the only way that God speaks to us. He speaks in various ways; through dreams, circumstances, His revealed Word, prophecies, visions, and by the voice of the Holy Spirit. (Heb. 1:1-2).

We need to develop the art of hearing God in our hearts. Believers should expect to be led by the Spirit of God in their hearts. “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” (Romans 8:14). One of the characteristic of a mature believer is that he is being led by the Holy Spirit. I found out that more that 90% of the prophetic revelations that Jesus received during His earthly ministry were by SENSING. Some people call it impression. Sensing is a full KNOWING in your heart of what God is saying. It is not an audible voice, but the message will be so real and will seem as though it is an audible voice.

“For he KNEW that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.” (Mark 15:10).

“But Jesus KNEW their thoughts, and said to them: "Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.” (Matt.12:25).

“But He KNEW their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, "Arise and stand here." And he arose and stood.” (Luke 6:8).

“…and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He KNEW what was in man.” (John2:25).

“When Jesus saw him lying there, and KNEW that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, "Do you want to be made well?"(John5:6).

“When Jesus KNEW in Himself that His disciples complained about this, He said to them, "Does this offend you?” (John6:61).

“Now before the feast of the Passover, when Jesus KNEW that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.” (John 13:1).

Sensing or knowing can be so powerful that you can know the names of some people you never met before; knowing a date and time an event will happen. You could sense the presence of angels when they come around, the kind of angels, and the type of assignment they come to accomplish in a meeting. You could also sense the presence demonic forces in a place.

Our senses can be developed. It may take you time to make a major decision by this method, but it is good. The devil doesn’t have access to a believer’s heart but can manipulate his mind. Sensing is in the heart. Develop your spiritual senses. Paul had a KNOWING or a SENSING in his heart of the impending danger that would befall them. He knew, sensed or perceived the coming storm and wind that were ahead of then. “Men, I PERCEIVE that this voyage will end with disaster and much loss, not only of the cargo and ship, but also our lives" (Acts 27:10).

God usually speak before showing us (in vision) what He intends for us to know. Whatever visions you receive, let your heart or sensing confirm it. Every instruction of the Holy Spirit you obey will produce the supernatural in your life or Ministry.

The Holy Spirit also leads us by the “go” or “not to go” signs. The “go” sign is leading us forward and the “not to go” sign is restraining us backward.

Understand Inspired thought - A thought of a thing that crosses your mind and means nothing to you, but at a point becomes inspired to make a lot of sense to your heart. The very thing you were ignoring will become so real and then you feel strongly that something should be done about it. This is an inspired thought by the Holy Spirit in your heart and it is an indication to act. The Holy Spirit could inspire any object to pass a message across to you; either in words, writings on posters, objects around you, or sound.

Understand the prompting of the Holy Spirit - Prompting is when the Holy Spirit is acting upon your spirit. It brings situations to the knowledge of your heart and would push your heart to act on what He is bringing to your awareness. For example, you may see someone in need, and the Holy Spirit might prompt your heart to arise and help. That is the prompting of the Holy Spirit.

Understand Impression - Impression is when the Holy Spirit brings something into your heart. A thought of something that has never crossed your heart or an issue you have not thought about for a long time. When this thought comes to your heart, there will be a strong growing awareness in your heart about it. It will keep growing and coming to you and will give you much uneasiness until you act before you will have complete rest. It is like a light burden on your spirit, but carries a caring presence of God. A word of knowledge or the word of wisdom could come to your heart by impression. It is the same as “I perceived,” or “I sensed.”

Misinterpreted Vision

The primary role of a true prophet is intercession. Be careful of prophets who don’t like intercession: a close intimate prayer fellowship with the Father. A prophet is also a messenger. In the Old Testament, not all the people of God were prophets. They don’t have the Spirit of God in them, and so, they go to prophets or seers for guidance and confirmations. But in the New Testament, all believers have the Holy Spirit in them and God speaks and lead all His children. Prophets in the New Testament can only confirm what the believer has already received. God uses prophets to confirm calling and personal issues in the lives of individuals and ministries. When that is done, it enlarges, strengthens and empowers the recipient to move forward with what he had received from the Lord.

God has used me to confirm to some believers about their prophetic ministries or gifting and they are now operating in it powerfully. By the Holy Spirit, I have confirmed to so many evangelist, pastors and teachers about their call which they received and applied thus having result. I found out that when a believer or a Minister receives accurately his or her specific or original anointing or call, the anointing will activate the person to operate effectively therein.

God doesn’t only confirm ministerial callings, but also confirms business, carriers or courses in secular schools that some of His children should study. I have experienced this and have seen people who do not know their future careers, and God will confirm to them what they had been thinking to do with their lives.

I have seen hundreds of believers confirming to themselves about their callings, healing, restoration, etc, speaking what they do not naturally know about others when I was leading them in prophetic activation session. In our activation session, I have seen so many sick people get healed, restoration reaching many; people weeping because they are receiving accurate personal prophetic word, and hundreds prophesying. It is very easy to prophesy; it is very easy to see vision and to evangelize. Most times, we just need simple teaching. And that is why God has placed the five-fold ministry in the church; the apostles, PROPHETS, teachers evangelists and pastors: to train and equip believers to grow into maturity. A mature apostle can easily train and release other apostles. Likewise, a mature prophet can easily equip and activate believers to operate in the prophetic gifts like vision, prophecy, prophetic intersession, prophetic teaching and music, etc. So it is with the teacher, the evangelists and pastors: they will produce after their kinds. We have countless testimonies in our activation session. Spiritual things are real. The Spirit realm is ‘more real’ than the physical realm. Although there is a need to seek godly counsel and confirmation from believers and ministers, we should not be over controlled by it or depend on people for constant confirmation of prophetic visions and revelations. God wants all believers to hear Him for themselves. You can hear Him accurately and see clear visions. God used some prophets and teachers in the church that was at Antioch to CONFIRM and release Paul and Barnabas into the apostolic work. (Acts 16:1-6).

Misinterpreted Visions

There are certain locations and areas of Ministry you will see in the Spirit which are only meant for intercession and not for you to physically go to for ministering. I once saw a vision that I was ministering in a certain town in Nigeria. I misinterpreted the prophetic revelation. I thought that I was to go there as a missionary. I thank God that He helped me not to take that wrong step. It was the Lord who brought the vision, but it was for me to intercede for the church in that region and not to go physically. Learn to discern spiritual locations for ministering and the places that you are to go physically. We will achieve the whole purpose of a prophetic revelation if we follow it gradually. Learning and knowing exactly what you clearly received from God, giving the vision or the revelation an accurate interpretation and having an accurate application of the vision. If you receive and are able to interpret clearly the vision but miss the application, the full purpose of the vision will not be achieved. If your prophetic vision is wrongly interpreted, you will miss out to a great extent.

There must be accuracy in the reception, interpretation, and in the application of prophetic visions and revelations.

I was told a story of a believer who was praying and waiting on God to speak to him on what next to do with his life and then came a vision. In the vision was clearly written the letters P.C. He wrongly interpreted the vision for Plant Church. So, he went into church planting. He suffered greatly in ministry. Things weren’t working for him in the ministry because it was not the will of God for him to Plant a Church. Then he withdrew and went into much prayer and waiting. Afterward he got the accurate interpretation. The meaning of the letter P.C which he saw in the vision, was for him to Plant Corn. He had peace and fully knew this time around that the interpretation was correct. Then he went into Planting Corn. The Lord blessed the farm work and the man prospered greatly. He prospered because that was the will of God for him, to Plant Corn. God’s hand is only on what He speaks or shows.

We can misinterpret an accurate prophetic vision or a revelation if the condition of our heart is wrong. We need to remove worldly desires from our hearts. Our minds must be transformed by the Word of God. If the desire for the lust of the eye and the syndrome of quick fame is in us, we can misinterpret an accurate prophetic revelation. There is a need for the fruits of the Spirit to be developed in us which will guide us not to misinterpret prophetic visions and revelation. The fruits of the Spirit are: Love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. (Gal.5:22).

In the presence of many counselors there is safety. Do not be a lone ranger in life or Ministry. Share your vision to mature believers or Minister who can help you. We should be broken and teachable to learn from others. Don’t be in a haste to act when it comes to major issues of life and Ministry. Pray through it, think through it and allow God to lead you. Among the five fold ministries, it is only the prophetic ministry that Paul said it should be judged. This means that even a mature prophet can miss the receiving of a prophetic revelation, or miss the interpretation in itself, while others could miss the application of the prophetic revelation. Prophetic Ministry in the New Testament is different from the prophetic ministry in the Old Testament. In the Old Testament, they were not born again, that is, the Holy Spirit was not IN them. He only comes UPON them to prophesy and departs from them immediately they finish prophesying. But in the New Testament He is IN us, making our mind to become active when He is speaking through us. That is why Paul said that the spirit of a prophet is subject to the prophet.

We could grow daily in our gifting and calling. Let us keep learning to improve ourselves to be accurate in the receiving, interpreting, and in the application of prophetic visions and revelation.

Understanding Destiny Vision

A destiny vision is a revelation you received from the Lord concerning your future and is inescapable to your heart. It is the plan of God for your future. And each time you remember it, you just know that it is from the Lord. That was the kind of vision that Joseph received from the Lord. It is called a destiny vision because it has to do with your destiny. Joseph’s vision came to pass after many years.

If you had received any dream or vision from the Lord which has to do with something in the future, wait for it. God will bring it to pass in His own time. Destiny vision gives strength to the recipient to keep moving. Jesus was able to press and pass through the crucifixion pain because of the Joy that He saw in advance. Such visions will be tested by God. The enemy will also work hard to ensure that you abort such a vision.

Several people had received a destiny vision from the Lord when they were in their youth, but as they advanced in life, they allowed the vision to fade away. The enemy gave them another dream. He gave them a career that is not from God and they pursued it with all their time, energy and resources. We can be sincerely wrong. Follow God’s plan for your life.

Have you received a destiny vision from the Lord? If you haven’t yet received, I encourage you to pray, press on and, if possible, fast until you receive it. “Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.” (Jer. 33:3). The purpose of a destiny vision is to bring a blessing to a generation or a nation. The destiny dream Joseph received came to pass, and it helped thousands of people from dying by famine.

You may not really know the fullness of what the Lord would do by the vision He gave to you; but a generation someday will be so glad that you were there and stood for them because you obeyed God and waited for the fulfilment of the vision. The vision the Lord will give is because of a generation. It is greater than you. It is not all about you. Have you received a destiny vision from the Lord?

Prophecy and the Prophetic Office

Prophecy is speaking the mind of God by divine utterance. It could be for encouragement, exaltation, comforting people or saying what has happened in the past, what is happening in the present or what would happen in the future.

Types of Prophecy

Reporting Prophecy:

In a reporting prophecy, you will have a vision, dream or the Holy Spirit will speak to your heart and after receiving it, then you will declare it to the people. This is reporting what has been already given to you. For example, the prophecies of John the Beloved in the Book of Revelation are reporting prophecies. He wrote what he had seen in the Island of Patmos. “I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,” (Rev.1:9-10).

Spontaneous Prophecy:

This is a prophecy that comes out of the believer’s mouth at the spur of the moment, spontaneously, on which the person has no prior knowledge of what to say or would not know when the anointing comes at such a time. The spontaneous prophecy could last for seconds, minutes or hours. After the release of the prophecy, the vessel forgets what he said and when asked, he hardly remembers the words emanating from such prophecy but remembers only some key words of the prophecy. Jahaziel prophesied spontaneously.

“Then upon Jahaziel… came the Spirit of the LORD in the midst of the congregation; And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's.” (2Chro. 20:14-15).

Spontaneous in Reporting prophecy:

Sometimes in reporting what you were told, or what you had seen, suddenly other words will begin to come out of your mouth that you never planned to say. It suddenly shoots out in one, two or few sentences. There and then, you will fully know it was God that had spoken and not you. This form of prophecy happen to so many believers when they are sharing simple testimony of God’s works in their lives or when they are encouraging people but they didn’t know it is a form of prophecy that proceeded at the end of the sentences or phrases after they must have spoken.

Prophecy in Praying process:

I have said that prophecy is a supernatural utterance. It is a spoken word that is not a product of human calculations. When you are leading public prayers or praying privately, there are times when you may begin to utter or declare certain words into existence, which were not what you planned to pray about. At this point, you will become charged up or fervent in your spirit and you will know that what you said is real and will come to pass. It is a form of prophecy in a prayer setting.

Prophetic Preaching:

There are occasions whereby a Minister has prepared a sermon to preach. But as he walks towards the pulpit, the Holy Spirit moves on the prepared teaching and breathe a dimension of inspiration into it. When such messages are preached, people usually confess at the end of the meeting that the Holy Spirit moved.

The gift of tongues that is a prophecy:

There is the public side of speaking in tongues and the private side. (1Cor. 14:1-20). The devil has confused many believers so that they will not understand and embrace the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of praying in tongues. In the public side of speaking in tongues, there is a need for interpretation to the hearer (congregation) and God will always raise someone to immediately and spontaneously interpret in a known and understandable language. When a word is given in tongues and there is no interpretation, it is because someone has missed God -he fails to connect to God or tune in-to receive or was scared to interpret. In the private side of praying in tongues, it is between you and God who speaks privately that no man may fathom what was spoken. When a message is spoken in an unknown tongue an interpretation is done in a known tongue and this is equal to prophecy.

Private side: “For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh NOT UNTO MEN, but unto God, for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.”(1Cor. 14:2).

Public side: When a message is spoken out in an unknown tongue and the interpretation followed, it is equal to prophecy. (1Cor.14:27).

Types of Prophetic Anointing

There are different types of prophetic anointing. By this, I mean there are different levels and operations of the prophetic anointing upon prophets. One prophet will be different from the other. We have so many prophets in the Bible; they operated with different messages and methods. “And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.” (1 Cor. 12:6).

• Prophetic Seers Anointing: These are prophets that see more into the spirit realm by visions than others. The prophets in the Old Testaments are called seers because they see into the spirit realm. Visions come frequently to this category of prophets. It could be an open vision, spiritual vision (inner vision), trance or the vision of the night. God opens their eyes to see. “… and in the visions of Iddo the SEER.” (2Chro. 9:29).

In this kind of prophetic encounter, some feel a divine presence around them when God wants to show them a vision. Some feel like taking a short nap and then comes the vision. When the presence of God comes on them, it will be so strong that they would want to do nothing but just be alone and in a quiet place, to rest or sleep. At such moments they would be suddenly taken into the realm of the Spirit to see something. After receiving the vision, the sleep-like feeling clears off from their eyes completely. This is a seer anointing. Sometimes you would see in an open vision. It can come at a season you are discouraged or burdened about an issue, and you are transformed into the spirit realm the moment you lay down.

God could show you event in an open vision literally, that is, your physical senses will not be suspended but you will be watching the event as if from a television screen.

Prophetic Intercessors: Some prophets are more into the intercessory aspect of the Ministry. They have a very strong passion for intercession. They are involved in several forms of strategic spiritual warfare. Moses and Daniel are good examples of prophets in the Bible who have a very strong intercessory anointing. Daniel interceded for the release of a whole nation of Israel from their captivity in Babylon. And Moses interceded each time God is angry with His people to destroy them.” (Num. 14:17-20).

• Prophetic Minstrels: Other prophets easily prophesy through songs or by the playing of instruments. Such ministering brings a lot of encouragement to people and creates an atmosphere of divine presence to bring healing, deliverance and blessings to people. It brings believers to a place of encounter to hear from God in that atmosphere. (1 Sam.10:5-9).

• Prophetic Equippers: This is an anointing that comes on a certain group of prophets to equip believers for the work of the Ministry. It is a training anointing to teach other believers. Such prophets raise many other prophets and activate believers into the prophetic gifting. Some believers are prophetic teachers. They are not logical in their teachings like the believers who are strictly teachers of the Word. They are inspired teachers of the Word. (Eph. 4: 12).

• Prophetic Writers: These categories of prophets are gifted writers. Their writings are inspired. They do not write because they want to make money, fame or a legacy. They write as commanded by God. They received the writing Ministry as a commission from God. John the Beloved who wrote the Book of Revelation was a prophetic writer. As they hold their pen, prophetic anointing would come on them and they will begin to write great prophetic words for the now or the future.

“WRITE the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter;” (Rev. 1:19).

• Prophetic Miracles: These prophets are gifted in the area of signs and wonders. Great healings and miracles follow their ministrations. God used Moses in signs and wonders. The spiritual gift of faith, gifts of healings and the gift of the working of miracles follow them. “…Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:” (Luke24:19).

• Prophetic Actors: Their lives are messages. Each time God wants to deliver a message, He makes them to ACT it. Hosea was commanded to marry a prostitute, to show how Israel has cleaved to the worship of strange gods. (Hosea1:2). Ezekiel was told to sleep on one side of his body for days. Agabus used a belt to tie himself, and said that the owner of this belt will be bound by the Jews. It was the belt of Paul. Later, Paul was bound by the Jews. (Acts 21:11).

There are several forms of prophetic actions that God could instruct any believer or a prophet to do, but it should be by a clear instruction.

Prophetic action is a rehearsal or putting into the physical what God is doing in the Spirit. When this anointing comes on these prophets, they begin to gather physical objects that relate to something that is presently going on in the spirit realm what was done in the past or concerning the things that happen in the future. For example, Prophet Elisha put his hands upon the king’s hands and asked him to open the window eastward and shoot out an arrow of the Lord’s deliverance. The king shot only three times and Elisha was not pleased with this. Elisha wanted him to shoot many times; he told him that he smite the Syrians only three times.

Some prophets, by mere looking at the natural creation, could discern what was going on in the Spirit. It is done by the revelation of the Holy Spirit. They are suddenly attracted to an object, and then the message comes.

Prophetic action is an anointing. God uses some prophets more on this line than others.

Five Realms of the Prophetic

These five realms of the prophetic are the ways God use to communicate with His people. Each of the method is unique.

These methods include:

• The Spirit of Prophecy

• Gift of Prophecy

• Prophetic Presbytery

• Prophecy of the Scriptures

• The Office of Prophet

The Spirit of Prophecy

Often, during corporate worship service the Holy Spirit will be present to speak to the people. During these times, there is a special anointing for the prophetic that He releases on various members of the group. This release of the corporate prophetic anointing is not related to a prophetic office, but is a sovereign move of the Holy Spirit falling on whoever He desires to fall upon. Usually, the Holy Spirit desires to fall on those who are open to and willing to be used by Him, who are willing to step out in faith and move with Him. (1 Cor. 14:31).

When this Spirit of prophecy comes upon a congregation, the Spirit of God activates even those who do not have the gift of prophecy or the office of a prophet. It is a corporate type of anointing.

The Gift of Prophecy

The gift of prophecy is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. God gives it to believers as He wills. It is by His choice. It is not the same as the call into the prophetic office. However, if we desire it and asked God, He can give it to us. The basic function of the gift of prophecy is for edification, exaltation and comfort. (1Cor.14:3, 14:1).

Prophetic Presbytery

These are group of mature Ministers or believers. They could be heads of Ministries or churches. They could come together in a locality to form a spiritual team. The reason it is called "presbytery" is because it is done by those who meet the qualifications of a presbyter (elder, or overseer) in the Church. These come together:

  • To seek prophetic revelation and confirmation, or to activate and release those called into a particular Ministry office.

  • To wage a strategic spiritual warfare over a region.

Prophecy of the Scriptures

The Word of God is on itself prophecy. Every word of prophecy that comes from the other four realms of prophecy must agree with the Scriptures. “For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.” (Rev.22:19-19).

“We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts. Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.” (2Peter1:19-20).

The office of the prophet is different from the gift of prophecy. These are two different issues. We need to also understand that they are two different words “office” and “gift”. An office is different from a gift. An office is a position of trust; it is an authority given to a person to occupy a position. But a gift is limited. A gift is a small fraction of a responsibility.

Ministry offices are divine callings. The five ministry offices are listed in Eph. 4:11-12: apostles, PROPHETS, pastors, evangelists and teachers. And in 1Cor. 12:1-10, the gifts of the Holy Spirit were listed: the gift of prophecy, the gift of the word of knowledge, the gift of the word of wisdom, the gift of healing and the gift of the working of miracles, etc. Jesus gives the ministry gifts Eph. 4:7-11, while the Holy Spirit gives the gift of the Holy Spirit, 1Cor. 12:1-10.

To be in an office is to have all the material necessary to help in the smooth running of the office. In the secular office, if you are a director, you may have a secretary, personal assistant, and other personnel working with you. Many functions comprise an office. To stand in the prophetic office, you must be a born again believer of Jesus Christ, filled with the Holy Spirit and with at least two of the revelation gifts plus the gift of prophecy manifesting consistently in your life and Ministry. This Ministry is part and parcel of the prophet who is in the prophetic office. He is concerned daily on how the church and the people should be directed: to hear the voice of God and obey it. He finds joy and fulfilment when people are responding and craving to hearing the will of God and to obey Him. He finds joy when his prophecies come to pass. He feels a strong prophetic anointing upon him before, during or after prophesying in a meeting. Thereafter, he becomes more humble and feels like hiding himself from people after his prophecy. It comes first of all by a call to the ministry. As you respond to the call, the anointing will come upon you thereafter. I cannot tell for certain how long it takes before it comes, but I believe the duration depend on the timing of God, the certainty of the location you would be sent to and the nature of one’s assignment.

There must be a definite divine encounter or an experience from God or the Holy Spirit upon you before you are able to step into the prophetic Ministry. If you are truly called into this awesome Ministry office, you will know for sure: God will tell you and give you a sign. In addition, people around you will know. You would not need to put a title of a prophet by your name to authenticate the office; the fruits of the ministry will prove it. A tree is known by its fruits.

Prophecy is speaking the mind of God concerning people, places and things in a known language. It is a supernatural utterance from God. God uses different believers to prophesy in a unique way.

In the simple gift of prophecy, there will be edification, exhortation and comfort, and there is no speaking forth of future events. (1 Cor.14:3).

All believers can or should prophesy but not all are called into the prophetic Ministry office. That God used you to prophesy at some time and it came to pass does not mean you are called into the prophetic Ministry. That you have dreams which occasionally come to pass does not mean you are a prophet or a prophetess.

Most evangelists have the gift of prophecy but not the office. I have seen several evangelists claiming the prophetic office. This is dangerous for them. But sometimes, God shows and speaks through believers who have no gift of prophecy about future events but the words they had spoken came to pass.

It is the frequency of manifestations of the gift of the word of wisdom, gift of the word of knowledge, discerning of spirit plus the gift of prophecy that makes one a prophet. You must be led to prophesy. In some believers, the unction comes up gently while in others it comes with a force.

The Ministry of the prophet is not the same as the gift of prophecy. Prophetic office is among the five government ministry offices He gave to the Church. (Eph. 4:11; 1 Cor. 12:28; Acts 13:1). The gift of Prophecy is for three main functions: edification, exhortation, and comfort. However, the Office of a Prophet has authority invested in it, to function in a higher realm of Ministry than the Holy Spirit's gift of prophecy.

These are some of the functions of the office of a prophet:

• Providing direction. (2 Kings 5:10).

• Giving words of correction and warning. (Ezek. 3:18)

• Pronouncing divine decrees of God's judgments or blessings.

• Impartation of spiritual gifts. (1 Tim. 4:14).

• Anointing ministries (the three ministries of the Old Testament were anointed by prophets: the first king, Saul, was anointed by the prophet Samuel (1 Sam. 10:1) the first High Priest, Aaron, was anointed by the prophet Moses (Ex. 28:41). Prophets could anoint other prophets: Elijah anointed Elisha. (1 Kings 19:16).

• They are custodian of the secrets of God. (Amos 3:7).

Prediction Is Not Prophecy

Prediction is to declare a word in advance, that is, to foretell on the basis of observation, experience or scientific reasons that an event will come to pass in a life of a person, places or thing while prophecy has nothing to do with observation or experience of any sort but foretelling by the Holy Spirit. The message must be God’s ordained, direct Word. Some of the messages we hear now as “thou says the Lord,” are nothing but prediction. After many calculations by their reasons, they declare them based on human reasons that are not from God. All we know about God and His acts were the things revealed to us by His Spirit. (1Cor. 2:12-14, 1Cor. 2:13.). There is a prediction by a prophetic insight that could come to pass accurately, but it is still a prediction. And don’t call yourself a prophet because you predict events. The prophetic office is a call by God. “And NO MAN TAKETH THIS HONOUR UNTO HIMSELF, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.” (Heb. 5:4).

There is a prophetic insight that is called prudence in the Scriptures, but it is not the same as the gift of prophecy. Prophetic prudence works, but it is not the same as prophecy. Prudence is having the wisdom to plan for the future. “A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.” (Prov. 22:3).

Some satanic prediction could come to pass because demons will honor the satanic word to perform it. They could only fulfil a satanic word of disaster. We need to cancel any satanic pronouncements or prophecies spoken against us, against our families or against our nation. We need to understand that spirit beings need a word from people to operate on earth or in people’s lives. If it is a negative word, demons will bring it to pass and when it is a positive word, that is, God’s words, His angels will bring them to pass. Be careful of what you SAY because our words affect our lives. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” (Prov. 18:21). Therefore, we need to understand that prediction is not the same as a prophecy. Declaration by prophetic insight is not prophecy. Having the wisdom to plan for the future is not the gift of prophecy. Prophecy is a declaration by the Spirit of God.

Judging the Prophetic

The scriptures encourages us to judge prophecies. Paul said that when a prophet speaks, others should judge. “Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge.” (1Cor.14:29). Prophetic Ministry is the only Ministry among the other Ministry callings that Paul said it should be judged. It should be judged because it speaks on behalf of God; and words spoken on behalf of God must always and at all times remain accurate. Secondly, the Scriptures told us to test every spirit because not all spirit or prophecies are from the Lord. Any prophecy that is from the enemy can cause havoc. “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”(1John 4:1).

These are several ways we can judge prophecies;

An Inner Witness Of The Holy Spirit

God speaks to all believers. When you are under a false prophet, the Holy Spirit will speak to your heart by a gentle voice or by a sign of uneasiness in your heart that there is something false about the prophet. But if you resist the leading and continue to stay under such a person, after a while, you will not hear that leading again. The spirit of the false prophet will capture your mind. In a case where a believer is prophesying, if he is speaking from his mind, you can know if it is from his mind or it is from God. There is always a check of the Holy Spirit in our hearts; it is feeling of uneasiness, uncomfortable feeling, no freeness in our hearts, which is the stop sign of the Holy Spirit. Learn to obey such leadings that can save you a lot of pains and lost. “But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.” (1John2:27).

Find out if the words contradict the scriptures?

Any vision, dream or prophecy that is not in line with the Word of God is not from God. God’s Word will not tell you to hate someone, to steal, kill, covet, or lie. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” (2 Tim 3:16-17).

If a prophecy goes against scripture, disregard it and throw it away. But there are times when a prophecy can be against our own understanding of the Bible. That is why it is important that we build ourselves in the Word.

What is the prophet's attitude towards the brethren?

Find out if the prophet is walking in love. Anyone who hates his brother or sister is in darkness. A true prophet cares for the welfare of the people and wants to see them walk in the Word and in the will of God. He cries when he sees that what is written in the Word is not practiced in the church. A true prophet is not motivated by material things, money or fame, but to please God in all ways. Doing the will of God is their food.

The Character Of The Prophet

There so many false prophets. You will know them by their fruits. A true prophet walks in the word. He manifests the character of Christ. The passion of Christ is his passion. Find out if the prophet enjoys worldly pleasure and engages in immoralities. The fruits of the Spirit MUST manifest in his life. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. (Gal5:22).

Did The Prophecy Come True?

The Scriptures answered this directly: “When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.”(Deut.18:22). If God speaks, the Word will come to pass. But there are prophecies that could be delayed or stopped by God from coming to pass, especially when it is a prophecy of judgment. God changed His mind against destroying Nineveh when the people repented. Some prophecies take time before their fulfilment. It took hundreds of years before the prophecies of Jesus’ coming to the earth came to pass.

There was a time God used me to give a prophecy that He is giving us a president devoid of human selection. In other words, it will come by His doing and not by election. When I spoke that word in a meeting, in 2007, I thought it will come to pass in a few weeks, but it took three years.

Does the Prophecy promote Jesus or man?

If a prophecy exalts a man rather than God, then the prophecy may not be from the Holy Spirit. “...For the testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of prophecy." (Rev. 19:10).

Independent Witnesses

A matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses. “…In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.” (2Cor.13:1).

Does the Word Set Us Free?

A true prophetic word sets people free from satanic bondage. An evil prophecy puts burdens and yoke on people. Some of them make you to pay for the service you received from them. True words from God will encourage and comfort you. “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:32).

Does the Prophet testify that Jesus is God?

Any spirit that denies that God came in the flesh is not the spirit of God. “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. (1Jn 4:1-3).

Signs and Symbols

I tried to give some basic interpretations to the meaning of some numbers, colors and objects. But you need to bear in mind that a picture could have more than one million meaning. God usually speaks to you by the things you are very familiar with. For example, if you know that a bus carries people, He may use a bus in your dream to let you know that there are people He placed under you to oversee their spiritual well being; to drive them to their destiny. That you always see a car in your dream doesn’t mean God wants to give you a physical car; a car in a dream usually talks of Ministry.
